Anex Head
More

Adopted 12/27/14

Anex

Anex is a 10 month old male with black and very light tan coloring with soulful eyes. He weighs about 67 lbs and is a very laid back young dog who often looks like he's smiling at you. He came from a Modesto shelter, so nothing is known of his background.

We do know that Anex likes to play with the female German Shepherd in his foster home but has moderate energy. He also likes being inside and settles down immediately. He is housebroken and has nice house manners. He needs coaxing to get in the car and seems a little uncertain about car rides when the car is moving. He is great on a leash. All the staff at the vets office liked him for his sweet demeaner.

Gabriel Head
More

Adopted 12/27/14

Gabriel

Gabriel is a 4.5 month old boy weighing about 30 lbs, with a touch of something else that makes him smaller than a typical German Shepherd. He also has cute feathering around his stand up ears. This is one nice, moderate-energy pup.

He was an owner surrender when he was 8 weeks old and was then diagnosed with parvo. He has been treated, is healthy and now ready for his forever home.

Gabriel is an easy puppy and has been a favorite among many young children - always supervise children around any dog, even a puppy such as Gabriel. He likes other dogs, if introduced properly. If they charge him or snarl at him right away, he backs away, not sure what to do. He likes squeeky toys and will chase after balls.

GSD Head
More

Adopted 12/27/14

Porter

Porter is a 2.5 year old, black and tan male weighing about 90 lbs, although he can afford to lose a few pounds. Porter was originally in our group with a litter of pups we called the "beer puppies" and adopted when he was 3-4 months old. He was raised with a 10 lb poodle and another medium sized dog. Unfortunately, there was an incident with the neighbor's 5 lb dog, which caused the family to reluctantly return Porter to us.

Porter is housebroken and waits by the door if he wants to go out. He needs to be given boundaries and reminded of them a couple times but, once he knows them, he's very good inside. He knows sit, stop, out, go inside your kennel, and is very food motivated. Still working on the down, but he walks very well on a leash once you remind him to stay with you.

This is a Level 3 Dog. Please be sure you understand what this level of dog requires.

Shar Head
More

Adopted 12/27/14

Shar

Shar is a 4 year old female who was an owner surrender from the Modesto Shelter.

She seems to be housebroken and has awesome house manners. Shar is eager to please her people and she knows basic commands. Shar meets new people with confidence and she enjoys getting pets and belly massage. New dogs are met with caution, as she will tend to be dominate by growling.

She has been living with a resident German Shepherd that is now her playmate. Even though Shar has three legs, she doesn't let that slow her down.

Wrigley Head
More

Adopted 12/27/14

Wrigley

Wrigley is a very handsome black and red 18 month old male. He was an unclaimed stray out of a local shelter so nothing is known about his background. Even though he is a little on the thin side at the moment, Wrigley already weighs 90lbs. He will be a big boy once he fills out.

Wrigley gets along with all of the other large male and female dogs in his foster home. He was a little shy at first, but is coming around, and really likes to play with a couple of the other dogs. Out in public he has met small dogs while on leash, and has done well with them.

Wrigley appears to be housebroken, but doesn't seem to know any command except sit. He is learning to go into his crate at night without a struggle, and he does sleep quietly at night now.

Camden Head
More

Adopted 12/20/14

Camden

Camden is a 3 year old sable male who was a stray from a Sacramento area shelter, so nothing is known of his background. He is not a tall dog, weighing approximately 70 lbs., and can stand to lose a few pounds. Now in a foster home with several other German Shepherds and cats, Camden has been an easy dog to have around. He is housebroken, has nice house manners, knows basic commands, and rides well in the car. Camden was also around a 20 month old child and was very gentle.

Inside Camden settles down nicely. Outside he seems to be on alert and will alarm bark at movement outside the fence, including when the garbage truck stops to empty the bins. Camden will engage some with the other dogs, but seems to prefer the company of people.

Hera Head
More

Adopted 12/20/14

Hera

Hera is currently a thin 10 month old female weighing about 60 lbs. She was an owner surrender, adopted her as a stray from an Oakdale shelter when Hera was 6 months old. They found that she needed more time and attention than they could give. Hera lived with children and other dogs in the previous home.

In her foster home, Hera is living with two adult male German Shepherds and a female German Shepherd. Hera likes nothing better than to play a game of "chase me" with the other dogs and has energy to play for longer periods of time. She can be a bit of a drama queen if she thinks the others are playing too rough. If bored, Hera may decide to dig in the yard or chew on whatever she can find. If shoes are left out, she thinks they must be toys and will carry them off to gnaw on them. This girl is affectionate and loves a good belly rub. She also likes to play in water and will tip over a pail if it is not attached to keep it upright.

Lada Mae Head
More

Adopted 12/6/14

Lada Mae

Lada is an adorable 5 month old, very playful German Shepherd mix puppy. She was rescued from a local shelter so nothing is known of her background. Lada gets along well with all her foster sisters big and small, they play all day and night.

Lada is learning to go into the kennel on command which takes a little time but she is getting the hang of it with treats as her reward, once in the kennel she sleeps all night. She is also working on sit, down and drop it.

Lada is potty trained however like a typical puppy she has had a couple accidents. She will need continued training and supervision to become full housebroken. She is a great in the car and loves to go for rides, does well on a leash and likes to pounce through the creeks on hikes.

Wyatt Head
More

Adopted 12/6/14

Wyatt

Wyatt is a large 7-8 month old male, weighing just over 70 lbs, with a thick black and tan coat. This boy was an owner surrender to a Sacramento area shelter when his previous family had personal and physical issues causing them to give him up.

Wyatt lived with two young children and a miniature schnauzer previously, however care should be given around small dogs and children due to Wyatt's size, and he's still growing! Primarily kept outdoors, he now prefers the comforts of being indoors and does take coaxing to get him to go out. Not realizing his size, he wants to be a lap dog and be cuddled.

He is currently living in a home with a young female shepherd and they love to play together. Being young, he will dig and chew if he's not properly supervised.

Asta Head
More

Adopted 11/22/14

Asta

Asta is a gorgeous four year old female with a plush white coat. She was surrendered by her owners when she and the other female in the home matured and no longer could get along, and separating them constantly became too much for the owners.

Asta lived inside in her previous home, so is housebroken, crate trained, rides nicely in the car, walks well on leash, and knows her basic commands, and listens fairly well. She previously lived with children, but due to her energy level, probably a home with children over age 8 would be best. Asta is a high energy, high drive girl. While she gets along with the three large male shepherds in her foster home, she needs to go to a home as an only dog, or another large male.

This is a Level 3 Dog. Please be sure you understand what this level of dog requires.

Clint Head
More

Adopted 11/22/14

Clint

Clint is a 58 lb, 10 month old boy who still needs to fill out. He has a flat black & tan coat. He was an owner surrender when his previous person didn't feel it was fair to Clint to be left alone all day while he worked.

This boy is housebroken, has moderate energy for a young dog, and is very affectionate. He is currently in a foster home with another young female German Shepherd and they love to play.

Clint occasionally tries to get on the couch and will sneak a shoe if you don't watch him, but he responds well to being told no. When excited he jumps up on people, so care should be taken around small children.

Norman Head
More

Adopted 11/22/14

Norman

Norman is an approx. 6 month old Belgian Malinois. He is currently sharing a home with 4 German Shepherds that are older and larger. Norman mixes in very nicely and plays with the big dogs with no issues. Norman has a lot of property to run around on, and has been seen chasing after small critters, so cats may be an issue. Norman is very gentle, and likes to cuddle up with his foster parents when he is inside. Norman settles nicely at night and sleeps on his own.

Norman uses the dog door to let himself out when ever he needs to use the bathroom, and has not had any accidents inside the house.

Norman is very active and athletic. He would make a great running partner. He knows the basic command of sit, and comes when you call him. He is not food aggressive, and has good treat taking manners.

This is a Level 3 Dog. Please be sure you understand what this level of dog requires.

Pensee Head
More

Adopted 11/22/14

Pensee

Pensee is a black & tan female weighing in at approximately 60lbs. She was an owner surrender to the Modesto shelter. Her former owner had to move and was unable to take her and the other small dogs with them. She knows basic commands (sit & down), waits patiently for her food, and is house trained. She does not like to sleep in a crate and will escape. Currently she sleeps on a dog bed by the bed in her foster mom's room.

Pensee currently lives with, and gets along with, a male GSD, 2 dog savvy cats and a teenager (it is unknown how she is with young children). She loves to go on car rides, is learning to walk on a leash & working on better house manners (she likes to see what is on the counter).

Mikayla Head
More

Adopted 11/15/14

Mikayla

Mikayla is a very cute GSD with a charcoal black coat with cream colored undertones and tummy, a curled up tail that is constantly wagging, and a mischievous glint in her eyes. She came to us as an unclaimed stray from a local area shelter, so nothing is known of her background. As such, her exact age is unknown, but we estimate her to be approximately 8 months old. She has shorter but very stocky legs and weighs about 55 pounds.

Mikayla is housebroken, and loves to run around outside with her pack, as much as she loves to hang out around them in the house. Although she is on the smaller size, what Mikayla lacks in stature, she more than makes up for in drive and enthusiasm. She has a very playful and affectionate nature and a pleasant energy about her. Her play style is very assertive at times, and she does not hesitate to mix it up with the much larger alpha male GSD in her foster home. Because she plays this way, she can sometimes come across as being a little bossy. However, she is presently learning appropriate behavior thru consistent correction from her human and canine pack mates.

This is a Level 3 Dog. Please be sure you understand what this level of dog requires.

Adopted 11/15/14

Timmy

Timmy is an extremely nice, affectionate 70 lb, 4.5 year old male, who was returned to us by his previous adopter when he moved out of the country and couldn't take Timmy along.

This boy was well cared for and came to us with toys and treats, beds, bowls and extras that his past family wanted to be sure he had. He was an only dog, but had lived with a cat, and was kept socialized with other dogs.

In his current foster home, he is living with cats, two adult male shepherds and another female foster shepherd. He and the female love to romp and play, although Timmy doesn't seem to understand the game of chase.

Terry Head
More

Adopted 11/12/14

Terry

Terry is a large handsome 4-5 year old male. He has a nice thick black coat, and weighs in at about 80 lbs. Terry was an unclaimed stray out of a local animal shelter so nothing is known about his background. Terry was likely an outdoor only dog, as he is still a little nervous in the house, but is learning new things every day like going up and down stairs, what a hairdryer is, and is taking it all in like a champ.

Terry gets along with all of the large male and female dogs in his foster home. While he likes to gallop around the yard and explore, he doesn't really want to play with the other dogs. He seems to like their company and doesn't want any trouble, but doesn't seem to engage in any of the doggie games.

He is a very happy boy, who loves to lick and give kisses. His tail wags in a circle clockwise, and then changes to counter clockwise. He doesn't bark, but actually talks. He loves to go for rides in the car, and is great on the leash.

Aksel sleeps quietly in his crate at night, and is housebroken.

Peetie Head
More

Adopted 10/25/14

Peetie

Peetie is a strikingly handsome boy with a fluffy red and black coat. Because he came to the Sacramento County shelter as an unclaimed stray, nothing is known about his background. He is a strong stocky guy who weighs in at a healthy 88 lbs., and is approximately 3 years of age. Peetie is a bi-color dog with reddish-brown legs and facial markings that are as distinct as they are beautiful. This guy is one handsome devil who turns heads and gets lots of attention everywhere he goes. But don't fall in love with him for his looks. Fall in love with him because he is such a great all around dog!

Peetie came to us from the shelter with a high level of captivity stress, a bad case of kennel cough, and a fairly serious ear infection. He exhibited fearful behavior in his new foster home, and became possessive of anyone who gave him affection. As a result, he was very dog reactive the first few days, but he quickly overcame this thru a lot of one on one time and massive socialization with dozens of other dogs in the rescue.

Simba Head
More

Adopted 10/25/14

Simba

Simba is a handsome 4-5 year old longcoat male. His previous owners only had him three months and surrendered him to a local shelter when they could no longer care for him. They left him out during the day, inside in the evening for a little bit, and he slept in the garage at night. His coat is in pretty good shape, but will take a little work for him to become the stunning dog he could be. He is also underweight at 75 lbs., and could probably use another 10 pounds on his thin frame.

Simba has gotten along with all of the large male and female dogs in his foster home. In his first few days there, he hasn't played much yet, but certainly seems to like hanging out with the crowd. Simba has liked all the people he has met so far. At the shelter, he passed a uniformed officer, he immediately stopped, sat right in front of him and made eye contact. Once the officer greeted him, Simba jumped up on him very excited like he just ran into a long lost friend.

Maverick

Maverick is an extremely handsome black and tan sable male about two years old. He was a stray from a Sacramento area shelter, so nothing is known of his background. Currently Maverick is very thin. He eats well, so he should start putting on weight soon so his ribs don"t show. He is a tall dog and looks tough, but is very sweet, affectionate and has a nice temperament.

With the use of a prong collar, Maverick walks well on a leash and did not have any issues walking through crowds of people and a sea of dogs at a recent event. We were even together on stage in a line up next to a Cocker Spaniel with no reaction from Maverick. He is currently living with two male German Shepherds and a female shepherd about his age and cats.

Taiko

Taiko is a one year old handsome black and tan male with a longer coat. He was surrendered to a local area shelter for being too much dog for the owners to handle. They had him a week. We don't know anything about his history prior to that.

Taiko is a typical adolescent puppy that hasn't been trained. He is mouthy, and jumps up, and will pull on leash if you let him. He seems to have lived inside as he has some indoor manners. He appears to be mostly housebroken. Taiko likes to help in the kitchen. He will jump up and put his paws on the counter top right next to you to see what he can do to help you. He is learning that that is not acceptable.

Zaan would be the perfect dog for a runner/hiker or an active family with a dog currently at home. He can easily keep up a strong running pace for miles and loves the exercise. Zaan is crate trained, potty trained, and rides easily in the car.

Alise is a very sweet girl, very friendly with the people she has met so far. She loves to put her head in your lap for pets. Currently Alise lives in a home with other large male and female dogs, and gets along with all of them. She likes to find a partner dog to play tug of war with. Argo

Argo is a gorgeous red sable male, about three years old. He has intense gold eyes, that will just melt your heart when he looks at you. He was an unclaimed stray out of the Sacramento area so nothing is known about his background. He could stand to put on a few pounds as he is a 70lb. dog with an 80 lb. frame. For the most part he has a very calm and quiet disposition. He is settling into his foster home nicely, but was probably an outdoor only dog in his previous life as much of the world and the house appear to be new to him.

Argo gets along with the other large male and female dogs in his foster home. He is learning how to play with the other dogs in an appropriate manner. Argo doesn't have any formal training, but he is fairly easy to walk on leash. He is learning sit and down, and to settle inside the house. This is a boy that loves to be with his human, he loves to follow them around the house. He likes to snuggle and bury his head in your lap. We rescued them from the shelter at around 8 to 10 weeks old, so they are now about 4 months old. Based on her current size and weight, we believe Rika will mature to a mid-sized girl at around 50 lbs.

Rika has a happy, outgoing Lab-like personality. Her tail is always wagging, and she is always up for an adventure.

Rika LOVES water and absolutely must go to a home where she will get plenty of water play. The first time she saw a pool she jumped in and started swimming laps. We'd point her to the steps, but she wanted to keep swimming.

Instead he will amble over and sit in front of you, then look up at you with his soft chocolate eyes and wait for you to pet him. He loves to have his belly rubbed and get as close to your chest with his body as possible. He will put his paws around your neck and nuzzle your ear if you let him.

Serafina is confident, smart and independent and does fine with the other two German Shepherds and cats in her current foster home. She is sleeping quietly through the night in a crate and we're working on housebreaking her and teaching her house manners. When fed, she will already sit and is working on "wait" before eating. She likes to grab things to carry around and must have several chew toys to redirect her from items that are not acceptable for her to chew up. Still very much a puppy, Zinc is working on his house manners. He sleeps nicely in a crate at night and walks very well on leash. Adopted 9/6/14

Dutch

Dutch was an owner surrender to a Sacramento shelter. His previous owner had to relocate out of the country and couldn't take him along. This is an 85-90 lb male, who doesn't realize his size. We believe he is a Belgian Malinois/German Shepherd mix and is a nice carmel color with a flat coat that doesn't seem to shed as much as a shepherd. Dutch is outgoing, friendly and affectionate. The previous owner took Dutch to basic obedience class where he was trained in English & German. He does need more work walking on leash and will jump up on people, counters and furniture when excited. He seems to be housebroken, especially with the use of a dog door. Because of his size and his jumping up when excited, he should not go to a home with small children, although older children would be fine. He rides very well in the car and jumps in willingly. He is sleeping through the night in a crate that is filled with chew toys for him.

Ernie is an unclaimed stray rescued from a shelter in the Turlock area. Although the shelter estimated his age at 7, we are guessing his age is closer to 9 years old. He has a good sized frame, but weighed only 62 pounds at intake, and has enjoyed putting on a little much needed weight. Ernie came to us with some dental problems and an ear infection, but he has been to the dentist, and his ears are responding well to medication. He may have slight long-term hearing loss because of it, but hears commands and normal conversation just fine. He also responds nicely to hand signals.

Ernie has been friendly and affectionate with every one he has met. He likes and enjoys interacting with people, and usually has a smile and a wagging tail. He is calm and easy going. He shadows his foster dad closely, and his favorite place is on a cushy dog bed near him, or lying on dad's feet.

Zane is a 3 year old Belgian Malinois who weighs about 70 pounds. He is a higher energy boy who easily settles down in the house after his time running, playing, and chasing outside. He is friendly with people, leans in for affection, and is housebroken. Handling him on a leash is easy, plus he understands basic commands and knows how to use a dog door.

He likes to be a part of the action, whether car rides, neighborhood walks, the beach, hikes of any length, or just relaxing at your feet after his morning walk. He sometimes tries to jump up for attention but is quite gentle about it. His ears fold back when he is happy or anticipating that something good is about to happen, which is often.

Aaron Head
More

Adopted 8/23/14

Aaron

Aaron is a strikingly handsome 3 year old male with a fluffy red and black coat. His facial markings are as distinct as they are beautiful. Incredibly, he was given up to a local area shelter by his previous family who moved away and could not take him. Aaron came to us a very shy boy, but is really working hard on coming out of his shell more with his foster pack and is making progress daily. He is extremely affectionate with everyone he meets, and really loves being hugged. Although he is clearly more interested in people than dogs, he really enjoys paling around with Hayden, another foster dog in his temporary pack. They have become fast friends, which seems to really be helping Aaron become more open and confident.

Although he is still quite shy, Aaron is starting to become a very affectionate and playful guy around the house. He loves to chase balls, gnaw on chew toys, and just run and play doggie tag in the yard with his pack mates.

Adopted 8/23/14

Stevie

Stevie is approximately 10 to 12 months old, and a very sweet, petite female. She came from a Modesto area shelter, so we have no background information on her. In her current foster home, Stevie lives with cats, a 5 month male Belgian Malinois/shepherd mix pup, and a 2 year old male German Shepherd. Stevie is unsure of new people in public, but is delighted to greet new people in her foster home especially if the guests scratch her back. When she is excited, her whole bottom half wiggles.

Stevie knows some basic commands, but if distracted by playing with the other dogs, she forgets to pay attention to the commands. Her house manners have been very good. She doesn't jump on people or counter surf. Once Stevie is in the car, she is a great passenger. Stevie is house trained, but in the past going outside may have been a punishment as she doesn't go out voluntarily. She behaves very well when left alone inside or out.

Baron

Baron is a large gorgeous black and red boy. At 15 months he already weighs 100 lbs. He was an owner surrender to a vet to be euthanized after he allegedly growled at a child at a park/dog park (no adults witnessed this interaction). The vet talked the owner into allowing them to place him. After a couple days of watching him interact with people, dogs and other animals, they called us to see if we could rescue him.

In his foster home, Baron lives with an older female shepherd. He just follows her around, and wants to do what she does, and be where she is. This boy is definitely a follower, and not a leader.

Fredrick is shy, but very sweet and affectionate. He is in a foster home with another German Shepherd and cats. His ears have not decided to stand up yet. He is sleeping quietly through the night in a crate and we're working on housebreaking and teaching him house manners. Hattie

Hattie is a sweet, gentle and intelligent 2 year old unclaimed female stray from a local shelter. She weighs around 65 pounds, and has had a litter.

Hattie is a sensitive girl, initially timid around people, and appears to have been handled too roughly in the past. She is coming out of her shell nicely, a little bit more every day. Once she is comfortable, she is eager to have contact with and pats from her human, gives nice little kisses, follows closely, and will pester for attention. She is more comfortable with women than with men, but is learning that men too can be safe and kind. She is quickly getting over hand shyness, and is getting comfortable with the leash being put on her. It is best to move slowly with her. It is also very important to correct gently and calmly.

Recently out of the shelter, Koda has kennel cough, which may be affecting his energy level. He comes when called, sits for treats, and is learning the down command with help as well as to fetch. He has excellent leash manners with the help of a pinch collar, and responds well to simple corrections. With access to dog doors, he is housebroken. Barbie

With severe mange and no adoption prospects, it appeared that this pitiful-looking 1 year old girl's life was over. But in this little doll, our evaluators saw a happy bundle of joy for someone. After four months of TLC and good veterinary treatment, 1 year old Barbie's outside is starting to reflect her inner beauty, and we expect her fur will continue to improve with time. She currently weighs 50 pounds.

Barbie loves to be close to her human, and is a gentle, very friendly and affectionate dog, unusually well behaved for her age. Her favorite places are underfoot, lying on your feet, or in your lap. She comes readily when called, and is very good about staying off of furniture. The whole world is new to Louie, but for the most part he adjusts to it fairly well. He is learning house manners, and has mastered the stairs, and thinks a dog bed is a great invention. At the shelter he would bark and snap at the dog next door through the fence, but out of his kennel he has gotten along fine with them.

Iggy

Iggy is a 4-5 year old female from the Grass Valley area. A smaller, compact female, she may have a touch of cattle dog or something else in her. Originally she was rescued from the streets of L.A. by an owner who could give her the love, but not the attention she needed.

Iggy is very smart, eager, and quick to learn. She has moderate energy, and likes to play with the other dogs in her foster home. She is housebroken, will sleep in a crate quietly, rides nicely in the car, and walks nicely on a leash. She knows sit and down, and is anxious to learn more. Unknown with small dogs.

Herman

Meet Herman, named for Herman Munster. This boy was pulled from a Modesto area shelter when he was about 4-5 months old by Greater California German Shepherd Rescue. As he grew and matured, he began looking much more like a Doberman Pinscher with a whip-like tail, than a German Shepherd, but we believe he may be a mix.

He had arthroscopic surgery on both elbows to repair elbow dysplasia. The rescue group was able to cover the $3,000 fee for this surgery. Donations are always welcome to help offset this expense.

He's friendly when greeting people, yet still alarm barks at home. He gets along well with other dogs and kids in his foster home. He has not been tested with cats.

He quietly sleeps in a crate with the door open at night. He has good house manners. He gets bored outside and picks a spot or two as a digging spot, but otherwise is content to be outside while his people are away for the day.

Sometimes he is quite determined to get his way, so he needs an owner that will give him firm guidelines and follow through with him. He is a sweet, charming boy that will take advantage if allowed.

Dino

Dino is a friendly white 2.5 year old boy that was an unclaimed stray out of Modesto. He has golden eyes, a sunny disposition, and is at his ideal weight of about 80 pounds. He is crate trained, housebroken, walks well on a leash, and likes to be around people.

He loves the outdoors, especially the trails, and is shaping up to be an outstanding hiking or jogging partner. On the beach, he playfully splashes around in the shallow water and is very social. Inside the house, he asks for the pet or play of a free hand then likes settling in by your feet for a nice session with a toy. On rare occasion, he tries to play mouthy with people in the same way that he plays with dogs, so young kids may be an issue.

Preferring to be with his human, he gets a little anxious if left outside alone. This is a smart boy who will open doors with flipper handles if they are not locked. The previous owners had a cat and Jess ignored the cat he met at a volunteer's home.

Zalina came with no house manners and didn't understand basic commands. Within a few days, she got better in the house, is sleeping through the night in a crate, and is beginning to respond to basic commands. She also walks nicely on a leash. When excited, she can be mouthy and will still jump on people, so she should not go to a home with small children. This girl loves human company and will shadow her foster mom throughout the house. GSD Head
More

Adopted 2/15/14

Guy

Guy is an unclaimed stray from the Sacramento area, so nothing is known about his background. He is 12 to 18 months old, and on the smaller side at 55 lbs, possibly mixed with an unknown smaller breed.

Guy is very friendly and affectionate with people, and has charmed everyone he has met so far. He is learning not to jump into laps, but is quite a determined kisser. He follows his foster dad like a puppy. He has very good manners for his age, even pausing at doors, but is still just a little bit mouthy. He sits for pats, and for dinner. He corrects easily, learns quickly, and seems determined to find a way to fit in. He walks nicely on leash without pulling, though not quite in a straight line yet.

Guy settles calmly in the house in the evening, or at work, where he rests quietly until his foster dad is done at the computer. He is still interested in chewing, but is good about selecting a toy or bone rather than household objects.

Elena

Special Needs

Ellena was an owner surrender to the Los Banos shelter, but little information was provided about her background. Her shelter paperwork listed her as 3-4 years old, but our vets estimate her to be 5-6. She is showing signs of arthritis in dysplastic hips and will require anti-inflammatory and/or pain medication to keep her comfortable.

She is a lovely, happy, and friendly female who weighs 79 lbs but could stand to lose about 10 lbs. Ellena seems to have fairly good house manners, appears housebroken, and crate trained. She has a calm demeanor, knows a few basic commands, and is very affectionate. She rides well in the car and likes to go for walks. She loves hanging out in the yard and soaking up the sunshine for short periods of time.

GSD Head

Adopted 2/15/14

Pierce

Pierce is a handsome Cream & Sable male weighing in at about 70lbs. He is 12 to 18 months old. Pierce came into our rescue from the Modesto Shelter, so little is known about his background. He is very affectionate and loves people. He loves to have his tummy rubbed, and will give you kisses He gets along well with the other male GSD and 3 month old female puppy in his Foster's home. He plays a little rough with the puppy, so a home with small children would not be appropriate at this point.

Pierce enjoys riding in the car, but needs to be secured, as he has figured out how to get out of the window if left down more than a couple of inches. He appears to have been an indoor dog, as he has good house manners, is housebroken, and sleeps quietly in his crate at night.

Walt Head
More

Adopted 2/1/14

Walt

Walt is a strikingly handsome 1 year old boy that was an unclaimed stray out of the Merced area. He has a black and tan coat with golden eyes, and should fill out to be about 80 pounds. He appears housebroken, is crate trained, walks well on a leash, and has a general desire to please his person. He is social with other dogs, as he is currently residing in a home with 8 other dogs. Walt has happily greeted everyone he has met thus far, and enjoyed riding in the car several times.

He has some interest in the resident livestock, and has climbed in the pen with them to investigate. Walt will also climb out of a wire 6' kennel to find his person. It is unknown if he would actually jump a solid wood fence, if left alone, but he does stays secure in wire crate, and in a kennel with a roof.

Benz Head
More

Adopted 1/25/14

Benz

Benz is a very handsome black and tan male about 18 months old. He currently weighs in at about 60 pounds but has a 75-80 lb frame. Now that he is in a foster home, we hope to put some weight on him. Benz was turned into a local shelter with a mama dog and some day old babies that someone found on their property, so nothing is known about his background. When walking, he tries to jump up and pull down the neighborhood trash cans, so he was probably fending for himself at least for a little while.

Living in a home seems to be new for Benz, although so far he has not had an accident in the house. He is very curious, and once you can coax him to do something new the first time (going up and down stairs, getting in and out of the car, etc.), he is usually willing to do it on his own shortly after.

Joey Head
More

Adopted 1/25/14

Joey

Joey came to rescue on 12/9/13 at 8 weeks old. A good samaritan saved him from being taken to the pound in the town of Paradise, so nothing is known of his background.

Joey currently lives with 2 other GSD's and 2 cats. He loves to cuddle and cries when first put into a crate, and he loves to play and be chased by the resident adolescent male.

He is a typical puppy with lots of energy, and is in the discovery stage of his surroundings, so he should have plenty of chew toys to keep him busy (and not chewing on things he shouldn't).

Oly Head
More

Adopted 1/25/14

Oly

Oly is a two-to-three year old handsome black and red male. He is a big boy weighing in at 80 lbs, and still needing to gain another ten. Oly came to us from a Butte County shelter where he was an unclaimed stray so nothing is known about his background. He has fly strike on his ears, and was very thin and flea ridden when he entered the shelter, so may have been on his own for a little while.

Oly doesn't seem to have much if any training, but he is an amiable guy who wants to do what is expected of him. He currently pulls on the leash, but is quickly learning leash manners. Oly seems to like water, as he likes to splash around in the stream on his walks.

Xavier Head
More

Adopted 1/25/14

Xavier

Xavier or Xavi is a large handsome black and tan male. At 14 months old he is still growing and filling out, and will likely end up over 90lbs when he is done. Xavi was confiscated by animal control after he and his sister repeatedly escaped the unsecured fencing of their yard and finally one day killed the neighbors emu.

Xavi has gotten along with all of the large male and female dogs in his foster home. Although it is guessed that he was formally an outdoor only dog Xavi has grown very fond of indoor life. He has not had an accident in the house, he settles nicely in the evenings, and is learning to sleep quietly in a crate at night.

Andromeda Head

Adopted 1/18/14

Andromeda

Andromeda was turned in at the Sac City shelter as a very pregnant stray, so nothing is known about her background. She whelped a litter of puppies the very next night at the shelter, and came into our rescue just hours after that. In spite of being a puppy herself, she has been a very good mama.

Andromeda, or Romy, is between 12 and 18 months and is still a little underweight at 55 lbs. Romy is very lady like, and affectionate and sweet with every person she has met. She does not jump up on people, instead preferring to scoot as close as possible and give soft kisses.

Jewel Head
More

Adopted 1/18/14

Jewel

Jewel is an elegant, pint-sized, black and cream beauty. She is a fully grown Shepherd mix around 2 years old and weighs in just under 50 lbs. She was given up about a year ago by her owners because she was too mouthy with their foster children, and she will try to herd them by nipping at their heels, so no small children for this girl! However she plays great with children 8-10 years or older.

She is very active and loves a daily walk or run, a selection of dog toys, and an occasional beef marrow bone. She needs to be kept busy or she'll find something to chew on to amuse herself; but with training has learned not to chew on things other than her own toys.

NO CATS OR CRITTERS.

Misty Head
More

Adopted 1/18/14

Misty

Misty is an adorable bundle of affection. She is about 6 months old with a gorgeous shiny black coat. She is a typical puppy with lots of energy and loves to play. She gets along great with the large dogs in her foster home, and they play all the time. She likes toys, but hasn't quite grasped the "fetch" thing quite yet. She is a curious pup, and inspects everything around her. So far, her puppy curiosity has only caused her to chew a couple things, and she has only dug a couple small holes in the yard. Misty has had a couple potty accidents, but caught on to using the dog door very quickly. She wakes her foster dad in the morning to take her out (even though the dog door is open). She takes care of business, and then comes right back in to lie down.

Clarabella Head
More

Adopted 1/8/14

Clarabella

Clarabella is a 10-11 month old beauty. She was an original stray from the Modesto area so nothing is known of her background. She weighs about 68 lbs and is energetic with an athletic, sleek build. She likes to follow her current caregiver and always wants to know what's going on and is quite curious. She wrestles with the male GSD in the household who likes to rough house. She also likes to engage him in a game of tag with the tennis ball. During a recent adoption day, she played nicely with the small pups she was allowed to interact with. At times, she becomes mouthy, so care must be taken with small children.

Clarabella seems to know a few basic commands and is learning house manners. With small reminders, she settles down nicely inside the house. She has an expressive face and is smart, and a quick learner. Cars make her a little anxious and she got car sick. This can be remedied with continued car trips for fun activities.
