PeetiePeetie Head

Peetie is a strikingly handsome boy with a fluffy red and black coat. Because he came to the Sacramento County shelter as an unclaimed stray, nothing is known about his background. He is a strong stocky guy who weighs in at a healthy 88 lbs., and is approximately 3 years of age. Peetie is a bi-color dog with reddish-brown legs and facial markings that are as distinct as they are beautiful. This guy is one handsome devil who turns heads and gets lots of attention everywhere he goes. But don't fall in love with him for his looks. Fall in love with him because he is such a great all around dog!

Peetie came to us from the shelter with a high level of captivity stress, a bad case of kennel cough, and a fairly serious ear infection. He exhibited fearful behavior in his new foster home, and became possessive of anyone who gave him affection. As a result, he was very dog reactive the first few days, but he quickly overcame this thru a lot of one on one time and massive socialization with dozens of other dogs in the rescue. He has since become a very playful and happy pack mate to the 4 other dogs in his foster home, and has learned that his human alphas can give affection to all pack members without jealousy. As his health has improved, and social development increased, Peetie has become much more calm and confident. He now enjoys meeting new dogs and people, and shows affection to everyone he meets. He really loves being hugged, and giving sloppy kisses to anyone who wants them!

Peetie is a smart guy, but appears to have had little indoor experience or human interaction, so he has a lot to learn in terms of obedience. He has just started to learn the sit and down commands, but he will need a lot of consistent practice to master the basics. However, he is fully housebroken and will let you know if he needs to go outside for a bio break. Peetie is still trying to figure out how to really enjoy having fun with toys. He likes to gnaw on durable chew toys, and play with tug toys, but most of all loves a good hard natural bone to sink his teeth into. Peetie walks quite well on a leash and corrects very easily. He has a soft mouth, and takes treats nicely (carrots and apples are big favorites). Peetie loves to ride in the car with his head out an open window, but will also lie down quietly at higher speeds, or when he is asked to. He sleeps comfortably in a crate but would be just as happy on a dog bed in a comfortable location. So far, Peetie has shown little or no interest in the two older resident indoor cats, and does not exhibit much prey drive. However, anyone considering adopting him would do well to introduce him to their cat carefully to be sure he is truly cat safe.

Even though he is a strong, stocky guy, Peetie's is still fairly athletic and loves to go out for brisk walks and run around the yard frequently. So if you adopt him, plan on getting him out to enjoy the sunshine in your neighborhood or local park often. Getting him through a full obedience class will be a must for his new owner, and will be a great way for you to bond and build a strong relationship with him. As social and playful as Peetie has become with his foster pack, we think he would do well in a home with at least one other Dog. On the other hand, he would probably also do well as a single Dog with the right family setting. Wherever he finds his forever home, Peetie will surely flourish with enough love, training, socialization, and exercise.
