JewelJewel Head

Updated: September 2013

Jewel is an elegant, pint-sized, black and cream beauty. She is a fully grown Shepherd mix around 2 years old and weighs in just under 50 lbs. She was given up about a year ago by her owners because she was too mouthy with their foster children, and she will try to herd them by nipping at their heels, so no small children for this girl! However she plays great with children 8-10 years or older.

She is very active and loves a daily walk or run, a selection of dog toys, and an occasional beef marrow bone. She needs to be kept busy or she'll find something to chew on to amuse herself; but with training has learned not to chew on things other than her own toys.

Jewel is housebroken with the use of a dog door, is crate-trained, and is a good listener with house manner reminders. She is eager to please and a quick study, so continued formal training will be a breeze for the right person who is willing to invest the time and energy in this tiny little gem.

Some of Jewel's quirks that make her unique may also make her a challenge for some home. Jewel has a busy brain as well as a busy body, so she needs both mental and physical stimulation and structure. Anyone who thinks dogs get plenty of exercise playing in the back yard would not be up to the challenge of raising a precocious little spitfire like Jewel. In the past if left unsupervised for very long, her busy brain turns to entertaining herself with chewing, digging, or barking. This has gone away with training and structure but may return if she is just left alone in the yard and not part of the pack.

Jewel gets along with all the large dogs she's met, but her rough-and-tumble play style will be too much for small dogs. She will do best in a home with another dog that is also very active and likes to play but would also do well as an only dog in an active household that will include her in their daily activities. Jewel is non-dominant and takes corrections from the other dogs well. Jewel has a significant amount of prey drive and should not be in a home with cats, other small dogs or critters.

This is a Level 2 Dog
