Amos Head
More

Adopted - December 2022

Amos

Amos is an active 8-month old pup. He was a stray at a local shelter, so nothing is known of his background.

Amos is happy to play chase and wrestle with other dogs outside. Indoors, he is learning to relax on a dog bed and chew dog toys. He is quite the goofy puppy at times, chasing the cat just for fun or prancing around with a ball.

He loves to be with his people, and jumps up to get attention or to be let indoors. He is learning to sit to get what he wants, but still needs to work on his manners. Because of this, older kids and people steady on their feet will be a better match for him. He walks on a loose leash, but isn't sure how to heel correctly yet. He goes to bed when told in his crate.

While Amos is still working on his manners, he's making progress and will be a great companion for a home ready to invest in continuing his training.

Annabelle Head
More

Adopted - October 2022

Special Needs

Annabelle

Annabelle is a beautiful six year old that spent her first years chained outside to a tree. When she came to us, she had needed an embedded collar removed and treatment for flea allergies, malnutrition and 2 very painful ear infections. She has had her two lower canine teeth and one other front tooth removed because she broke them off trying to get off of the chain. Even with all this happening, she is a wonderfully affectionate and gentle girl.

She has helped in the raising of four different puppies that were being fostered in the home. She has gotten along with the smaller terrier mix that is in the home. Upon first introduction to new people she is appropriately cautious but warms up quickly. She has been subjected to the attention of a two-year-old toddler and was very calm and tolerant.

Annabelle will be a special-needs dog due to the issues with her spine and hips. These issues are being treated with a nerve pain medication and she is very stable. She will do best in a home where she is not required to climb any stairs and has carpeted floor areas so that her legs don't slip. She is hoping for a family that can give her light to moderate daily exercise to keep her joints loose. She's very much enjoys car rides but needs help getting in the vehicle.

She will be happiest when she is around her humans.

Beringer Head
More

Adopted - April 2022

Beringer

Beringer is an adorable 8 yo male German Shepherd that won the hearts of his entire shelter staff due to his overall easy-going nature. It is clear he lived a comfortable life in his past, as he is very accustomed to the indoor environment. Give him a bed and a ball, and this guy is one happy camper.

Since his arrival in our program, Beringer has been placed on a slow weight loss regimen to reach his target weight of ~80 lbs. This routine suits him well, as he loves his low-cal veggies and daily walks with his human. He has an amazing ability to ignore loud vehicles and attention-gathering dogs on his walk, making this an enjoyable activity while reading the neighborhood pee-mails.

Beringer enjoys greeting all humans but may take some time to settle down and realize you are a part of his new family. He expresses his uncertainty with whines, but he will calm and relax in a few minutes. When he is with multiple dogs, he occasionally vocalizes with a grumble when they enter his personal space or bring rambunctious play too close. Because of this, he would do very well in a home with a calm female or as an only dog in the family.

This guy is crate trained and house broken. He enjoys any opportunity for car rides and will wait patiently for his owner to complete errands. If you're looking for a companion to play fetch, especially one with soulful brown eyes, this boy may very well be your match made in heaven.

Bogie Head
More

Adopted - November 2022

Bogie

Bogie is a handsome Red/Black boy who is around 3 years old. He weighs just over 80lbs, but needs to gain a few pounds to be at an ideal weight. He is a big boy and can be exuberant, sometimes not realizing his size, but he is learning manners and not to jump on his human when excited. He is very affectionate, and is a "leaner", but sometimes he needs to be reminded that he cannot always be the center of attention.

Bogie gets along well with the other 3 resident German Shepherds of various ages, and is also living with GCGSR pup Gibson. He also shares his foster home with cats, so he may be able to live with dog savvy cats - he is interested in them, but is learning to leave them alone.

Bogie will sleep quietly in a crate at night, and even pops into the crate during the day to nap. He can also be trusted to sleep free in the house, but you may wake up with him sharing your pillow. He is potty trained with use of a doggie door.

This guy is just an all-around great dog. He loves to ride in the car and go places with his human. He walks nicely on a loose leash, and loves to visit Home Depot and pet-friendly restaurants with this human. His stunning appearance and sweet nature attract attention wherever he goes, and he charms people he meets by offering his paw in introduction. He would love to join a family who will continue his training and socialization so that he can enjoy his best life.

Bombu Head
More

Adopted - December 2022

Bombu

Bombu is a 4.5 month old Black and Tan female who was rescued by a Good Samaritan from bad living conditions, then surrendered her to us. No details were provided about her history otherwise.

Bombu is crate trained and almost completely housebroken with a few accidents. She sits for her food and is decent on a leash. She is living in a foster home with other dogs and a cat.

When she comes in from outside she is a fur missile excited to greet and see her humans. Once she gets the energy out, she will lay by her humans and follow them around as they move rooms. Her favorite toy is a possum squeaker that she adores and makes it's own little noises. As with all puppies, she is starting to go through her chewing phase but also spends a good deal of time napping.

She is curious about the dog savvy-cat but does not want to chase. With more exposure they could get along just fine. She would do well to have another dog teach her the ropes and keep her busy, but with an active household she could be an only dog. She would benefit with formal training.

Brewski Head
More

Adopted - April 2022

Brewski

Brewski is a handsome Black and Tan 70 lb. male, approximately 1.5 years old. He was surrendered to a local animal shelter with no details of his past.

He is an energetic happy boy who does well meeting new people. Brewski plays well with other large dogs but can be a little rambunctious. He still has a puppy spirit and needs plenty of exercise. He is currently living in a foster home with 2 males and 1 female dog and loves to play. He is housebroken but may need some minor coaching upon arriving in a new environment. Brewski rides well in the car, and is learning the 'go potty' command with a treat reward. He knows basic commands and is food motivated. Brew will sit when told to before going in or out of the front door for his walks. He also been taught to sit, look at you, and wait before eating his dinner. He enjoys having plenty of Nylabones around to chew.

Brew would do best in a home with another dog who enjoys playing, and/or with someone who will be with him most of the time. A home with another playful dog would be ideal. He just wants to be with his people or another dog and does not enjoy being left alone. Brewski could be in a crate at night, and prefers to sleep in the same room as his human, but has done well sleeping in another room next to with his foster siblings. This handsome young man would love to be adopted by a gentle confident person who can continue to help him learn structure and rules. He may be able to be around cats but has shown some prey drive. Lots of new experiences and obedience training are recommended as well to help him gain confidence and be the best he can be. Great dog that someone will be lucky to adopt!

Foster Fail - November 2022

Coalton

Coalton is a very affectionate 7 month old male. He came to us as an owner surrender with his three brothers, Blackjack, Gibson, and Gretsch. He gets along with other dogs, sleeps well in a crate, and enjoys being with his human or just laying out on the back deck, enjoying the outdoors.

Coalton gets along with the other GSD's in the house, and loves to play with the young 3 mo foster Maisy. He is working towards pottty training, using a dog door most of the time. He still has an occasional accident when it is dark outside as he is still a litlte unsure about new situations. Coalton rides well in a car and does not get sick on the winding roads home. He is still learning to walk on a leash, but does great overall.

Draca Head
More

Adopted - December 2022

Draca

Draca is a gorgeous Red and Black 2 yr old female weighing approximately 70 lbs. Although her history is unknown to us, we are pretty sure she was on the front cover of the Shepherd Fashion magazine. You'll agree when you look into her almond eyes, complete with eyeliner presented with a happy warm smile.

This gal wastes no time jumping into LIFE. She is born to Party and Please and has no hesitation to greet any and all humans with her energetic wiggly wags. This may be accompanied with a tendency to 'jump-up-and-say-hello', so caution with young children. With consistent corrections, she is learning to practice restraint and sit patiently for anticipated affection. Once she receives your attention, she just might melt at your feet for your endless belly rubs.

When meeting other dogs, Draca can display bursting energy hoping to engage others in play. She does well in the presence of multiple dogs, but her energy level may not be compatible with the ones who prefer quieter company. Due to a high level of curiosity, she will take liberty to investigate and sometimes claim what other dogs have, including food, toys, and treats. When corrected by her pack mates, she may respond with confusion and protest. Thus, she will do best in a home as an only dog or with a submissive male partner. Consistent supervision and guidance is recommended while in the company of dogs to insure she properly minds her business. Because of her strong desire to please her human, Draca picks up on the rules very quickly.

This gal walks well on a leash and will ignore distractions along the way like a champ. She does well on car rides and is eager to join in on any adventure on your calendar! She is housebroken and is accustomed to using a dog door. At night, she enters her crate where she sleeps quietly. Come meet our zesty gal and witness this lovely package of fun.

Elinor Head
More

Adopted - July 2022

Elinor

Elinor is an adorable 6 month old female German Shepherd mix. She came in as an unclaimed stray at a local shelter and nothing is known about her past. She is being fostered with two adult GSD's and an adult malamute.

This girl is potty trained, uses a doggy door, and sleeps well in a crate at night. She loves to go for car rides, walks around the block, and receive cuddles with her humans. Elinor also enjoys playing with toys, digging in the back yard with her house mates, and playing fetch.

Elinor is very spunky. She would be best placed with a stable mentor dog to help show her the difference between good and bad play. She gets spun up when passing by dogs running the fence and may redirect. This little girl does not know her size and will challenge other dogs without hesitation if they are reactive. She needs to be placed with a strong leader that will continue her training and not allow her bad behavior to continue.

A DNA test was perfomed on Elinor. Her results are German Shepherd (50%), Australian Shepherd (33%), and Border Collie (17%). Although she is a mix, this girl is 100% adorable.

Epson Head
More

Adopted - March 2022

Epson

Epson is a beautiful sable female born on 12/29/2021. She was surrendered to us with siblings Hewlett and Packard (Packard is already in a Foster-to-Adopt home). The family who had the entire litter did not have people interested and were concerned of them not finding homes before they got too big.

Epson is a bouncy 12 week old puppy and soon will go through her biting/teething stage. She is vocal and enjoys playing with the other dogs in the foster house. She is crate trained, but still working on being house trained. She will sit for her food without a command. She would do well with another playful dog to teach her the ropes, but could do well on her own if kept active and busy. She does well with the dog savvy cats in her current home.

She will benefit from consistent training, exercise, and supervision.

Felipe does best when he is getting regular exercise such as daily walks. He walks nicely on a leash and responds quickly to corrections as needed.

Frijole Head
More

Adopted - March 2022

Frijole

Frijole aka Bean is a 1.5 year old male dark sable Malinois that has spent a good portion of his first two years visiting the shelter. Eventually his owners did not reclaim him, leaving him there for over 30 days. Upon evaluation, Beans foster mom realized how special this boy is and how he deserves much more! Bean is currently recovering from a injured foot, which is expected to make a full recovery. He also had a lower canine tooth removed as it was broken to the root.

At the shelter, Bean was in playgroups with other dogs. He took a strong liking to the girls but got along with all other dogs in the play group. Despite Bean's very social personality with other dogs, he will not tolerate being 'picked on' or 'bullied' by other dogs.

Bean loves his people and is also very social with strangers. He would love a home where he could be with his people and accompany them on vacations or even going out to a brewery! When leaving the shelter he said 'hello' to all the shelter staff. Bean's foster mom trains dogs professionally, so he's finally getting some obedience under his belt with things such as leash manners and house manners. He loves attention of any kind, often nudging your hands for pets, leaning into you or going between your legs for head scratches. Bean loads nicely into a crate for down time and sleeps there quietly over night. True to his Malinois nature, he does have typical Malinois energy. However, unlike the standard Malinois, Bean lacks ball and toy drive. He does enjoy working for his kibble. He is a smart boy so having daily mental (and physical) stimulation will be a necessity. Bean is a large dog, who knows his strength and isn't afraid to throw it around when initiating play, so a home with no small children is recommended. Bean needs someone who is experienced and is going to continue his training, socialization and be a strong leader. Bean's final adoption comes with a free training session donated by his foster mom. No cats or small furry critters.

Gent Head
More

Adopted - December 2022

Gent

Gent is a one year old silver shepherd. He is very affectionate and loves to play. Like most young dogs, he often forgets his own size when playing with people and other dogs.

Gent is housebroken with the use of a dog door to the yard and sleeps nicely in a crate at night. He might be able to sleep freely at night but he has a harder time understanding when it's still bed time for everyone else if he is allowed to sleep loose.

Gent is working on learning the rest of his manners for inside the house and for playing or hanging out with his human companions. He is a happy boy who wants to be loved and please his people so he corrects pretty easily but he requires structure and needs reminders when the puppy brain starts to take over.

Gent loves to go out for walks to explore what's out in the world. He can be a little nervous with new experiences but quickly adapts and is ready to try the next thing. He walks fairly well on leash but still has a little trouble with cars passing by while out on walks. As long as you keep on moving he will slowly keep trekking along and catch back up as soon as the car has passed. Regular walks and continued structure and exposure should help him adjust as he does with most other experiences.

While Gent is a happy and playful boy, he can be a bit of a bull in a china shop and knock just about anything over when excited. For this reason he may not be a great match for young kids. He has not be tested with cats or other small animals.

Gent will make a great addition to a lucky family that is willing to provide him with the training and structure to bring out the best in him while also including him in their daily lives and activities.

Gill Head
More

Adopted - April 2022

Gill

Gill is a bi-colored (mostly black with four black and brown boots with a touch of white under his tail) 72 pound male German Shepherd, approximately 18 months old. He was surrendered to a local animal shelter so nothing is known of his past.

Gill responds to correction quickly and is not possessive of toys so he plays really well with other large dogs. He is nicely housebroken in a house with a flip screen with access to the backyard. He knows some basic commands, is learning to heel now and is very food motivated.

He is still coming out of his puppy stage, so he is also learning not to put his teeth on people. This isn't a problem at his current foster home because there are firm boundaries and rules. He does sometimes play with your belongings, just being silly. Gill has medium energy, rides well in the car and is learning the go potty command. He is currently living in a foster home with 1 male and 1 female German Shepherd and loves to play with them. Gill is crate trained and sleeps throughout the night very quietly in his crate, in the same room as the other dogs (who are crated at night).

This sometimes shy boy would love to be adopted by a gentle person who can also provide structure and rules. Lots of new experiences and obedience training are recommended to help him with his confidence.

Goose Head
More

Adopted - August 2022

Goose

Goose is a 2 year old white male Shepherd with a gorgeous plush coat. He came to us by way of a local trainer who was working with him through a board and train after his prior owner entered hospice and could no longer care for him. He was recently adopted to an experienced family who discovered his high intelligence, yet he was not compatible to the household due to his high prey drive for cats. Despite these changes, he is showing us a tremendous ability to adapt to new settings.

When Goose first came to us, he was a little unsure of new people and experiences. While this has dramatically improved, he continues to 'alarm bark' when meeting some strange humans. Corrective guidance and the opportunity to 'check it out' rapidly extinguishes his uncertainty which is replaced with gentle wags. He is keen to his perimeter and seems to take pride in letting his owner know if potential intruders lurk. Consistent with his desire to please his human, he responds to human acknowledgement and corrections very well. He walks nicely on a leash with just the occasional correction needed if he gets a little bit too excited.

If there's a favorite pastime, this boy loves to play with other dogs! He will happily engage others in a game of tug with his rope toy or entice other dogs in a game of chase. His play style can be rather pushy, so supervision is necessary to remind him to maintain respectful boundaries. Over time, he demonstrates cooperative play activities.

Goose has excellent house manners. In the home, he will lay calmly near your side and enjoy his Nyla bone on his Xlarge bed. He is crate trained where he sleeps quietly through the night. He is house broken and accustomed to using a dog door. He is still a bit of a playful puppy at times, and if he isn't getting enough attention, he has been known to grab something from inside that doesn't belong to him in an effort to create a game of chase.

This gorgeous boy will make a great addition to a family that is able to provide regular activity, mental stimulation, and admire his unsurpassed beauty!

Grace Head
More

Adopted - October 2022

Grace

Grace is a 1-2 year old Black and Tan female with a somewhat freckled face. She is on the small side at around 55 lbs. She is underweight. She came from a local shelter, so nothing is known of her past. She appears to have had at least one litter of puppies.

Grace was extremely timid when she arrived. It doesn't appear she was ever let out of a crate as everything was new for her: floors, stairs, pools, bushes.you name it. The first time she went on a walk she spent the whole time trying to cower under parked cars. However, with time, this little girl is really blossoming. She loves playing with her big brother, Jett, and is learning how to navigate life.

She walks well on leash, but can still be scared by loud noises. She is housebroken and has learned how to use a dog door.

She knows come, sit and is working on down.

This little girl promises to be a really great dog.

Hewlett Head
More

Adopted - March 2022

Hewlett

Hewlett is a beautiful black and tan female born on 12/29/21. She was surrendered to us with siblings Epson and Packard. The family who had the entire litter did not have people interested in these three and were afraid of them not finding homes before they got too big.

Hewlett is the smallest of the three pups but it doesn't hamper her enthusiasm to play. She is toy driven and loves to play fetch. She is good with children and other dogs, but still has her biting stage to go through. She can use the dog door, but doesn't quite have all the housebroken rules down yet. She is being fostered with 6 year old Annabelle (see her bio at https://www.gcgsr.org/dog_pages/2022/annabelle.html) and Hewlett loves to snuggle up with Annabelle. Hewlett will also cuddle up with her person and fall asleep.

She would do well in a home with another dog, but appears she can do fine alone as well. She will benefit from consistent training and supervision. Although she has not been tested with cats or critters, she's still young enough to learn to accept them.

Huck Head
More

Foster Fail - December 2022

Huck

Huck is a small Black and Tan male, 7.5 months old and up to 34 lbs. He was a stray from a local shelter so we have no details of his past.

Huck is a nervous boy and slow to warm up to new dogs and people. Once he does, he's affectionate and loves to play. He's a bit of a drama queen if he thinks he's going to be hurt and doesn't tolerate a prong collar for that reason. He's mostly housebroken and will use a dog door. He would do best in a home with another confident, playful dog to provide him security when in public. He's curious about the resident cat, but shows no sign of aggression toward her. Nylabones and toys are necessary to redirect any unacceptable chewing.

Huck sits for his meal and will lay down when told if you're eating or don't want to be pestered by him. Formal obedience training and socialization are needed to make this young boy into a great dog.

Janet is an adorable female born on 1/26/22. She is blonde with a reddish head and a dark racing stripe down her back. She is the sister to Tahani and both were surrendered by a family who had the litter and these were the last two that didn't get adopted. We are told they are part Labrador retriever.

Janet is an active, curious and loving puppy. She loves being with her humans and the other dogs in her foster home including Tahani, her litter mate. She's a bit bigger than Tahani by almost 4 pounds and all legs. She's only had one vaccination to protect her against distemper and Parvo, so she can't go out on public ground yet. Jorgina Head
More

Adopted - May 2022

Jorgina

Jorgina is a petite 5 yo female Shepherd weighing 50 lbs. We know little about her past except that she likely was a mother to some cute pups. Good things come in small packages, and this girl is no exception.

Jorgi adores human affection and would love nothing more than to be in the company of her people and canine friends. She has a springy bounce when engaging in play with other dogs (large and small) as well as with herself! This gal is a package of entertainment when she plays 'cat and mouse' with her squeaky balls.

When not in the company of other dogs, her energy is well managed with daily walks and social outings. She won't hesitate to join you on a car ride and will wait patiently while you are away. When left alone at home, she will whine and occasionally dig in search for company. Sharing her home with another dog will help ease these behaviors, as well as guiding her with slow transitions into a daily routine of human absence. Upon reuniting with her person, she may try and capture your attention by jumping upward. This is gradually diminishing with consistent corrections; however, caution with small children.

In the home setting, she will occasionally try her talents at counter surfing, but she doesn't get very far given her petite stature. She will melt you with her soft eyes as she tries to join you on the couch (she thinks she qualifies as a lap dog), but will happily choose the dog bed if you prefer. In the evening, Jorgi eagerly enters her crate where she sleeps quietly all night. She is housebroken with the use of a dog door. This girl is a quick learner that would love nothing more than to offer you her devoted affection in the comforts of a loving home.

Kash Head
More

Adopted - July 2022

Kash

Kash is a robust 2 and 1/2 yo old German Shepherd male weighing 110 lbs. His dark features give you the impression he is serious about life. But look closer, and you will discover his ears reflect his true underlying goofy and puppyhood personality.

This boy enjoys meeting all humans with gentle curiosity. He will not pass any opportunity to go on a walk or engage with a game of fetch with a ball. His absolute favorite pastime, however, is to take a dip in the pool where you will find him swimming laps like an Olympic champion. Join in on the fun, and you've got yourself an instant pool party! In the home setting, Kash displays excellent house manners. Although he is a busy boy, he will eventually settle and lay quietly near his human.

As with many canines, this guy truly enjoys the company of other dogs. He has excellent greeting skills and is overall submissive in his interactions. Once he finds the opportunity to play, he may burst with romping puppy-energy. In fact, his persistence to play may be overwhelming to some canine playmates, so supervision is recommended. He has a remarkable talent to engage other dogs in a game of tug or chase! No dog is left bored in his company. He has never lived without a dog companion, and we feel he would do best with a playful mate by his side in his forever home. Treats and food capture his attention, but he will wait patiently for his turn to receive his food bowl.

Kash is housebroken and is also accustomed to using a dog door. He walks gently on a leash and ignores other barking dogs along his path. At night, he readily enters his XLg crate where he sleeps quietly. He is also eager to join you on a car ride where he is ready to experience any new adventure and discover what life has to offer! This guy will undoubtedly be a special addition to a very fun-loving home.

Macky Head
More

Adopted - December 2022

Macky

Macky is an extra large long coat boy estimated to be around 7 years old. He was pulled from a local shelter, so nothing is know about his background.

Macky is a total love, and bonds closely with his people. He is never too far away from his foster family, and can be underfoot at times. He can get excited, and has to be reminded that jumping up to show affection is not acceptable. He has lived in his foster homes with several other dogs large and small. He appears to be house trained, as well as crate trained, although he sleeps loose on a dog bed in his foster's home. He walks well on a leash, and loves car rides.

Macky is just about as "turnkey" as they come, and is looking for a home that will include him in all household activities.

Maui Head
More

Adopted - April 2022

Maui

Maui was pulled from a local shelter as a stray so nothing is known of her past. If she could be described in three words they would be loving, loyal, and companion. She was adopted about 2 years ago, but the family has a new baby and realize they cannot provide the structure Maui needs so she's back with us and is about 3.5 years old.

It was a quick introduction to the large breed family of pups (2 male / 1 female) and a 6 month old Catahoula puppy in her foster home, but no small dogs for Maui. She loves going on car rides and does not get sick on the winding roads. Maui loves going on walks and is gentle on leash around the neighborhood. She has been ignoring the occasional deer, the horses, goats, and chickens on the walking route.

This girl absolutely loves people. Although she does enjoy a good morning run around the back yard, she would rather be keeping her human company. She loves treats and takes them with a gentle mouth. This girl is happy to sleep quietly in a crate at night or curled up on a dog bed in your bedroom. She is potty trained, uses a dog door, and can be left inside the house for 4-6 hours at a time without accident of having things chewed up.

Maui can sometimes grumble when other dogs receive attention but corrects easily without incident. We are working with her on waiting her turn, while making sure she gets her attention too. She is quick to correct and is very submissive.

Melissa Head

Adopted - June 2022

Melissa

Melissa is an approximately four years old, pretty tan and black (possibly sable?) female weighing 78.5 lbs. She was adopted out about a year ago but due to unforeseen circumstances, that were no fault of Melissa's, she has been returned to us for rehoming.

Melissa is housebroken, she does not chew, and does not dig. She is okay in a crate. She does travel well in cars. She is great with adults, is a bit skeptical of strangers, but warms up quickly when she sees her humans interacting with them. She seems indifferent towards cats and other animals, just curious. She's cautious with bigger dogs, smaller dogs she doesn't mind, but needs to be introduced very slowly. Once she is comfortable with them, she loves to play.

She knows basic commands, sit, lay, shake, off, come, stay. She can be outside for periods of time, but she has been primarily an inside dog. She loves any toys that squeak, and loves walks with her humans. She is very affectionate and is the absolute sweetest girl.

Melissa is not good with young excitable, energetic children, so only older children or a no child household will be considered. She would love a home where she can be included in the family's activities like hikes and outdoor adventures.

Momma Mia Head
More

Fospice - November 2022

Momma Mia

Momma Mia, aka Mia, is a black and tan female who is approximately 10 years old weighing about 65 lbs. She came into rescue from a local area shelter so little is known of her background.

Mia was found at the shelter curled up on a bed in the corner of her run. She had just arrived at the shelter about 12 hours earlier and the shelter thought she was 13+ years old due to her poor body condition. She would not approach the volunteer calling to her from the gate of the run, so he went in to meet her and was greeted with a roll over for a belly rub. He complied and Mia gladly accepted the lead and went to the play yard. Under evaluation in the play yard, she was in very poor body condition with a wobbly back end, two-to three-inch-long nails and mammary tumors which had to weigh 5-10 pounds. She was so sweet and nice the volunteer couldn't leave her at the shelter, so he asked to foster her for the shelter until her stray hold was up. No one came to claim Mia, so she is now in rescue.

Mia has had her mammary tumors removed, which were benign, she's had all four feet nail trimmed to get her nails back to a normal length and is now a perfect weight. Mia does have arthritis and takes anti-inflammatory meds and still has a bit of a wobbly back end. Her wobbly back end is much improved with daily walks and playtime with the two puppies she's been fostered with.

Mia is an absolute doll and house princess with impeccable house manners and is an amazing companion pet. She will be your shadow and follow you everywhere, then plop on a bed and curl up for a nap. At some point in her life, someone worked with her as she knows all the basic commands and will work for treats and she loves to be trained!

She might be a house princess, but she wants to go, go, go. She wants out of the house and to be part of the world. She loves her walks and to be taken to pet friendly establishments. Everyone who has met Mia loves her and she just eats up the attention.

Mia is being fostered with a bunch of GSDs, resident and foster, and gets along with all, but she has a special affinity for puppies. Her foster dad has had two puppies since Mia came to his house and she's become best friends with both. She loves to play with them and you would think this girl is six years old when she's playing with the puppies.

The ideal home for Mia would be a home who wants a turn key, lovely companion pet who wants to go everywhere with you and when done, snuggle up in the nearest bed. She seems to enjoy the company of the resident dogs and playful young dogs, but we believe she could be an only dog.

Even though Mia is older, you would be missing out if you don't look at this girl!

Moxie Head
More

Adopted - June 2022

Moxie

Moxie is a cute red and black 3 year old, petite female weighing about 60 lbs. She came from a local shelter as a stray, so we have no history about her.

She has a very sweet temperament and friendly to all including younger kids. Very affectionate and often lays her head on your lap to be petted. Follows her human everywhere and although did not do well left in a crate without anyone home, she has been fine in the house uncrated and is proven she is housebroken. She sleeps through the night on a dog bed with no issues. She knows basic commands like, sit, stay, no and down and is a very quick learner.

Moxie is in a foster home with a nine year old male Shepherd and does fine, but can be a bit possessive over toys. She doesn't care for the crate and tries endlessly to break out. Most experiences seem to be new to her and she can be a little skittish until she is reassured. She does ok on a leash but needs work, she is very strong. She was afraid of passing cars at first but after two weeks and walking several times everyday, she hardly notices them anymore, unless they are particularly loud. She rides fine in the car but doesn't care for it much. She usually lays behind the driver seat on the floor while the car is moving and pokes her head up when it stops. The one time she road with the other dog, she was more relaxed and curious as to why he had his head out the window and she tried it a couple times as well.

Moxie would do best in a home with another confident male dog. Continued socialization and formal training will also benefit this sweet girl.

Pascal Head

Adopted - August 2022

Pascal

Pascal is a 4 year old male with traditional Black and Tan coloring. He came from a local shelter so nothing is known about his background.

Pascal lives with a female shepherd and constantly follows her around begging her to play. He prefers to play chase in the yard with dogs and humans alike. Pascal also loves to play with water especially when the hose is set to a jet spray. He gets a little excited and rambunctious when first getting out on a walk but settles in quickly with proper corrections.

Pascal has great house manners and is housebroken with the use of a dog door. He is crate trained and sleeps nicely free or in a crate at night. He is quite protective of his home once he settles in and needs to be introduced properly to guests that visit. With controlled introductions he will settle down and return to his nice house manners.

This sweet boy will make a nice addition to a family that will continue his training and provide the necessary structure which will allow him to flourish.

Adopted - March 2022

Patch

Patch is a super fun loving, bouncy 7 year old red and black male. He currently weighs in at 95 lbs and could use a few more pounds. When Patch joined GCGSR he was severely malnourished, had plenty of missing hair, and had a skin allergy. He has since regrown most of his hair and his skin issues have cleared up. Patch came from a Central Valley residence and not much is know about his past. What we do know is that he was adopted out roughly 3 years ago and had not been cared for well.

Patch loves to play and really enjoys being around people. He was a quick introduction to our resident shepherds and malamute with no issues. Patch also enjoys the company of our two resident cats, which can often be seen nuzzling on his nose or cuddling in for an evening nap. He loves to go for car rides and does not get sick on the winding roads home. He greets other dogs and strangers nicely. He does not appear to have any food, guarding, or leash reactivity at this time. This boy is potty trained, uses the dog door, can sleep quietly in a crate at night, or just left alone in the house without issue.

Patch has tested positive for heartworm and is currently going through treatment. He is roughly one month into his four month treatment cycle. It is possible for this love bug to be adopted to the right home, providing the new owners are willing to follow the medical guideline for treatment and care, which involves crating and reduced activity.

If you are looking for a super fun, goofy, and loving big boy, then Patch may be just the dog for you.

Piper is a 7-8 month old, roughly 40 lb female that came in from a local shelter. Little is known about her past. She has has been spayed, microchipped, and is up to date on her shots. Piper uses a doggy door and sleeps quietly throughout the night in a crate. She is good in the house and has not chewed anything up at this time.

She is currently being fostered with 3 large GSD's and a Malamute. Piper loves to play with toys, and loves to run around the back yard with her shepherd friends. She is respectful of the two dog savvy cats in the house, however she does try to engage in play. Close attention should continue to ensure play does not turn into prey drive. Piper walks pretty good on a leash and loves car rides. She does not get sick on the winding roads home. This girl is starting to know basic commands such as leave it, go to bed, stay, and sit. Continued training will help her become the best dog possible.

Piper has a ton of puppy energy and loves to run. It is important that she be placed in a home with a dog with like energy to help tire her out.

Randy Head
More

Adopted - July 2022

Randy

Randy is a large 4 year old white shepherd with one floppy ear. He came to us from a local shelter so nothing is known about his background. He loves to meet new people and prefers to spend his time inside.

Randy has pretty good house manners and is generally eager to please people. He is housebroken with the use of a dog door and sleeps nicely in a crate at night. When asked to sit he prefers to sit right next to you and leans in for extra attention.

Randy currently lives with an older female shepherd and enjoys her company. He often initiates play inside, but when she runs outside to go play he hasn't quite figured out he is supposed to follow. If she doesn't want to play he nicely finds a place inside to settle down. Randy would likely spend much more time playing with other dogs if he had a more enthusiastic playmate.

Randy is learning how to walk on leash, often does best when not asked to walk at a tight heel, and he seems to walk best with an extra 6-12 inches of leash. He gets a little nervous when big or loud cars go by but he is learning to trust that he is safe walking side by side with his human. If Randy gets a little distracted or overexcited during walks, a quick correction and structure helps settle him back down and continue on. Randy enjoys meeting other happy dogs of all sizes when out for walks.

He has not been tested around cats or other small critters.

Remi Head
More

Adopted - March 2022

Remi

Remi is an adorable 7-month-old female white German Shepherd mix. She was found on a rural road by a Good Samaritan. The good Sam notified authorities and tried to find the owners of this cutie for over a month with no luck or response to posted ads.

Remi is living with three GSDs and a couple of other medium sized dogs and gets along with all. Her favorite playmate is Momma Mia (a GCGSR dog up for adoption) who is a 10 yo female, and they play multiple times per day!

She is crate trained, potty trained with a dog door, walks well on lead, and is learning the basics - sit, stay, down, etc. Her foster dad takes Remi and the three other GSDs out for daily pack walks where she does well and knows her position in the pack as we walk. On these walks, Remi's position is between her foster dad (to her left) and one of the resident dog to her right. She has been taught the command 'inside', which is used when she has gotten out of her walking position and her foster dad wants her to return to her place in the pack. She does this very well.

Remi is extremely food motivated, so she loves to train! Since her foster dad runs a large pack, she has learned to be calm and wait while meals are prepared then waits patiently while the bowls are set for all the dogs and is released to eat. She has also learned to wait at a door until her foster dad has walked through and is good with the 'off' command when her foster dad comes in or goes out the front door or gate leading to the front yard. She is very much a puppy, but is learning how to be a big girl with the help of her foster pack and the boundaries and structure they live under.

Remi came to rescue a very unsure and insecure little girl. Her foster dad has worked with her, taking her anywhere dogs are allowed, trying to show her the positive side of places, things, people, animals, etc. She has done quite well, either in one-on-one situations with her foster dad or when accompanied by one of her foster pack mates. When taken to a pet store and observes another dog, she can get quite excited and animated and sometimes growls, but corrects well. If the other dog will allow approach, she almost always starts off with a play bow and tries to initiate play. She does better in these situations with another calm and confident dog by her side.

Remi's insecurities are most prevalent in the home. She is good at alerting when someone is at the door and if that person is invited into the house, she does quite well and will appropriately engage. If a known member of the family, not her foster dad, walks in the front door, or for example enters the master bedroom at night, she can get growly and puffy and sometimes bark but this is easily defused with treats and the sit command. The master bedroom example does not apply if she is crated, only if she is sleeping free.

Children - Remi's first encounter with children was a scary ordeal. With additional exposure and treats, Remi has found that they aren't scary monsters but fun play partners. Remi's foster dad does not have children, so her exposure to children has only been when she is out and about at dog friendly establishments.

As a 7-month-old puppy, Remi is smart, fun, sweet, cute and is always up for a game of chase, tug-of-war, fetch (she doesn't really return the ball, yet), training and water play. Remi loves water and loves to swim! At her foster home, the water buckets are outside and each day Remi is outside playing in them. Prior to Remi, the buckets were cleaned and filled once per day, but now, the buckets are cleaned and filled multiple times per day. Her foster dad finds this amusing, adorable and charming and loves to see her have such fun.until she comes in the house completely drenched and dripping water.

Remi will only be available for adoption to a home that has previous German Shepherd (or similar) experience, does not have small or young children and who have a fun, playful, well-mannered and confident dog.

This little girl is an amazing puppy, but will require work, dedication to training, regular exercise, continued socialization, structure and boundaries so that when she matures, she will be the perfect companion pet.

Sammy Head
More

Adopted - May 2022

Sammy

Sammy is an absolutely stunning red/black male who is about 18 months old and weighs in at a sturdy 86 lbs. He was a stray came from a local shelter, so nothing is known of his past life. The shelter environment was stressful for Sammy and he appeared very timid of new people and situations, but now in foster care this boy's sweet nature is shining through! While still slightly hesitant sometimes meeting new people, especially men, he is gaining confidence every day.

His regal, mature appearance is a bit deceiving -- this boy is still a big goofy adolescent who doesn't realize he is a large dog. He was housed with the little dogs at the shelter because he preferred their company, so perhaps that is where he got the idea that he is a lap dog. He is very affectionate and loves to interact with is his human, but his exuberance and tendency to play using his mouth may make him a bit too much for very young children. He is learning boundaries, basic commands, and he seems eager to please.

Although Sammy preferred the small dogs at the shelter, he is now great buddies with his foster pack of four other German Shepherds, especially GCGSR puppy Ricoh, so he would love another playful dog in his forever home. He is also living with dog savvy cats with only occasional reminders to 'leave it'.

He will sleep in the crate at night, but is also trustworthy to sleep uncrated, and he appears to be housetrained. Keeping chew toys available, keeps him from finding other interesting items to nibble.

Sammy does well on leash and loves to ride in the car - he even stepped out of his comfort zone to enjoy a trip to Home Depot with his foster mom. He seems to enjoy the new experiences, so continued socialization and training will help give him the confidence to live his best life.

Shaeffer Head
More

Adopted - August 2022

Shaeffer

Shaeffer is a 3 yo Black and Tan male with an impressive stature. He is currently underweight at 75 lbs, but he is making good progress on rebuilding strength and stamina. Although the story of his youth is unknown, he has puppy-curiosity and is responding remarkably well to human partnership.

While he was in the loud shelter environment, Shaeffer displayed constant high-energy with rough play behaviors. Once he adapted to the comforts of a quiet indoor life, however, he is showing quite the opposite. He enjoys being with his human in the home where lounging on his extra-large dog bed has become his favorite pass time. Add a belly-rub and he is your best friend! Daily walks with short intervals of play (monitored for assertiveness) with his foster-mate appear to satisfy his exercise needs. This may expand, of course, as he builds more muscle and strength.

Given his puppy-nature, he uses his height to his advantage by occasionally searching the counters for any unattended goodies, or to greet his humans face-to-face (in case you didn't notice him) to give you kisses. This is diminishing with consistent corrections and discovering that food and affection are no longer scarcities in his world. Even at ground-level, there are no shortages of kisses from this boy.

Shaeffer walks well on a leash and is becoming more eager for his car rides. He sleeps in a crate at night and is housebroken with a dog door. If you are searching for a new family member, this guy has the characteristics that make him a wonderful loving companion.

Foster Fail - December 2022

Sigmund

Sigmund is a 12 year old Belgian Malinois who was originally adopted from us in 2017. His owner unfortunately ended up with mobility issues with left him no longer able to care for Sig, who has a ton of life left in him!

Sig is very active for an older dog. He follows along for 1/2 - 1 mile walks 2 times a day and loves the large pond the ranch has. Which js great because he needs to lose about 10 lbs. He enjoys the companionship of his people and wants to be involved with whatever they are doing. He is a shadow inside the home and is never too far away while doing work in the yard.

He is fostered on a ranch type setting with 2 other large males and a smaller Malinois puppy. He does best with the more submissive male, he wants to play with him. He maintains a neutral relationship with the more dominant male but his foster owner stated that he can get snappy with a dog if they are being inappropriate or too pushy. He does have high prey drive towards small dogs, cats and other small furry critters such as chickens. He is an excitement talker, so at the beginning of the walk or right when he comes out of his crate he will let you know how excited he is by making noise.

Sig seems to be partially or mostly deaf. Aside from his selective hearing he also has, he can hear claps and certain tones. He absolutely loves the ball, he will carry it around all day or entice you to play a small game of fetch with him. His favorite toy is a large soccer ball. He sleeps nicely in a crate overnight and settles well inside the home. He also loves car rides.

Tahoe Head

Adopted - August 2022

Senior

Tahoe

Tahoe is a 6-7-year-old tall, male sable GSD. He was pulled from the shelter so nothing is known of his background. His personality is sweet, affectionate, and mellow. He likes to rest his chin on his foster mom's shoulder and stares very adoringly at her until she pets him. He is currently living with a cat, 3 male GSD's and a pushy female GSD in his foster home. Tahoe doesn't engage much or play with the resident dogs, but he coexists nicely. He has shown some interest in the resident dog-savvy cat, but with a 'leave it' command he leaves the cat alone. It is not known how Tahoe would be with small children.

He did well in the crate while recovering from neuter surgery and sleeps quietly on a dog bed in his foster mom's room. He's has good house manners and is learning how nice it is to be able to go in and out as he pleases with a doggy door. He was most likely a backyard dog as he spends a lot of time lounging back there but is learning quickly to enjoy life inside as well. Tahoe was very mellow during a bath and enjoyed the attention. We are working on leash manners as he pulls a bit. He's gained a few pounds in his foster home, but could probably stand to gain a few more. Tahoe will make a great, low-key companion. All he wants is some love and a good meal and he's a happy guy.

Thorston Head

Adopted - April 2022

Thorston

Thorston is a stout 18 month old German Shepherd male who is slightly underweight at 73 lbs. He was relinquished by his lifetime owner due to a new employment situation leaving little time to care for him. His upbringing led Thorston ('Thor') to flourish into a uniquely gentle, affectionate companion.

This boy enjoys meeting all humans and dogs with curiosity and ease. Strange environments, however, may be unsettling for this boy, leading him to whine or pace. He will overcome this well with calm leadership, allowing him to build confidence as he matures with each new exposure.

In the home, he displays good manners and will lay quietly near his human, often moving from spot to spot. He will gladly approach anyone who wants to offer affection, and he will say 'yes' to a game of fetch with a ball. He engages in play with his two other foster mates (see Jorgina and Zak), and he respects their space without protest. When left alone, he may vocalize with a robust how but soon settles as he waits for his human's return.

Thor is housebroken, walks gently on a leash, and is crate trained. He rides well in the car and is ready to discover what life has to offer!

No cats or small critters.

Tig Head
More

Adopted - October 2022

Tig

Tig is a 2 year old Belgian Malinois, possibly with a little German shepherd mixed in. Tig came to us from the local shelter so little is known of his background. Tig say on the shelters adoption floor for nearly 2 months being over looked, no clue why as this boy is very sweet and loves people. As soon as the GCGSR evaluator took him out of his kennel, he flopped on the floor and asked for belly rubs.

Tig greets other dogs appropriately and has great leash manners. He can be a little fearful of new things such as a quad or riding in the car but he recovers quickly. Tig is working on his potty training and is learning the luxuries of being able to be inside the home. He loves going into his crate and sleeps quietly in there. Tig is very people oriented and wants to spend every second of his life with them or touching them. When he first comes out of his kennel, he grabs your hands with his mouth. Even though it's a very soft grab, he is learning this behavior isn't acceptable along with jumping or climbing up in your lap when you sit down. Typical to most Malinois, he often likes to have a toy or something in his mouth. He enjoys munching on a chew or a chew toy, if he doesn't have one he will try to make a toy out of other objects such as shoes or food bowls. Tig does haven't any ball drive but he does have a pretty good energy level, so physical exercise is necessary to keep him happy. Tig will do just about anything for food and is pretty good about not wandering too far off while on off leash walks with his foster mom.

Tig can be a little unsure when a more pushy, dominate dog approaches. He would do best with a dog with similar play styles and not with one that is overly pushy.

It is unknown how Tig would do with cats or small furry critters. Due to his excessive mouthy behavior, Tig is considered a level 3 dog.

Vanellope Head

Adopted - July 2022

Vanellope

Vanellope is an adorable sable female born on 2/8/22. She has been in a foster home with cats, another young pup and two adult dogs and older children. She is affectionate and willing to please.

Vanellope will hold her own with dogs and doesn't appear fearful regardless of the size of the other dog. She is not quite house broken, but should learn quickly when she has someone home enough to get her out for regular potty breaks. She's also starting her teething stage so lots of toys to redirect her from putting her mouth on human hands when trying to play is critical.

Continuous exercise and socialization are important for a pup her age. Enrolling in obedience training will help bond her to her human and help her become a well behaved dog. Another well-behaved, playful male dog would be preferred and/or someone who is home most of the time to keep Vanellope out of trouble, will be important.

Vanellope is used to dog-savvy cats. Small critters unknown.
