Changing lives, one dog at a time.

Spanky Head
More

Adopted 12/30/17

Spanky

Spanky is an approximately one year old, black and tan male. He came out of a Sacramento area shelter as a stray so nothing is known about his background. His ears had signs of fly strike and his coat had several fox tails in multiple areas of his body, so he was either a stray for sometime or was kept as an outdoor dog. He is a medium sized boy.

Spanky would love another playful dog to burn up some energy. He's currently living with three other German Shepherds, but none of them will play with him. He may play too rough for small dogs. He's also living with an indoor cat, but is not at a point to be trusted off leash with the cat yet. Spanky is learning house manners and is being treated as if he's not housebroken so is currently kept tethered to his foster mom.

Darla Head
More

Adopted 12/23/17

Darla

Darla is about a year old and a beautiful black and tan long coat weighing 75 lbs. She came in as a stray to a Sacramento area shelter, so nothing is known of her background.

This young girl has lots of energy and unless laying down to rest, doesn't seem to want to stay still. She is affectionate and loves a good belly rub. She is living with a 3 year old female German Shepherd and two senior male German Shepherds and gets along with all of them, although they correct her busy behavior occasionally. She doesn't realize her size and tries to walk under the other dogs. When drinking water, she sticks her entire nose in the bucket so she frequently has a wet muzzle.

Joni Head

Adopted 12/23/17

Joni

Joni is an 8 week old black and tan female who came out of a local shelter and nothing is known of her background. She has not been fully vaccinated and therefore still too young to be allowed on public grounds for risk of getting sick.

She seems happy to explore her foster house and hang out with several foster German Shepherds. She is also being fostered with the puppy, Celine. She is happy to be a lapdog, but will soon outgrow her human foster brother's lap. May be OK with cats. More to come as we know her better.

Miela Head

SENIOR

Adopted 12/23/17

Miela

Miela (My Ella) is a cute and happy female (mostly) Belgin Malinois who is a around 8.5 years old. This is her second time in rescue and was originally adopted out in 2009 as a 5 - 6 month old puppy.

Miela, through no fault of her own, recently was surrendered to a local area shelter, and when the shelter staff scanned her for a chip, they called GCGSR to inform us they had one of our dogs. We immediately went to pick her up.

Once a GCGSR dog comes into our program, it will always be a GCGSR dog for life.

Alexis Head
More

Adopted 12/16/17

Alexis

Alexis is an adorable 5.5 month old, 41 pound black and tan female. She was rescued as a stray from a Sacramento area shelter, so nothing is known of her background.

She is a sweet and playful pup that needs boundaries to be her best. Because she is a smart and feisty girl, all the members of her new family need to enforce those boundaries. Young children are not recommended.

The foster mom says Alexis is working on sit, stay, down, wait (for food), and come. She is crate trained, rides well in the car and is learning how to walk well on leash.

Bochy Head
More

Adopted 12/16/17

Bochy

Bochy is a handsome black and tan 2-year-old male with floppy ears. He is currently overweight at about 95 lbs, but he's energetic and with regular exercise he should be able to lose another 15-20 lbs to get to a healthy weight. One photo shows a recent photo of Bochy and the other is how he looked last September at a healthy weight.

Originally an owner surrender in Sept. 2016, when his family's child became sick and they didn't have time to care for Bochy; he was adopted from us but returned after six months. The second family didn't spend time training or working with him and he became too much for them to handle.

Crosby Head
More

Adopted 12/16/17

Crosby

Crosby is a large red and black male approximately 3-4 years old who was an unclaimed stray from a Sacramento area shelter, so very little is know of his backgound

He appears to have had a food and/or flea allergy, as the hair on his back was very sparse. With a healthy diet his fur is already growing back nicely and he is well on his way back to a healthy weight. He currently weighs 76 lbs but could stand to gain 5-10 lbs.

Adopted 12/16/17

Janis

Janis is a beautiful, sable female, approximately 10 months old, who weighs about 60 lbs. She is on the petite side, but is young so she may have a tad bit of growing to do. She was came in as a stray to a local shelter so nothing is known of her background.

Janis is settling nicely into her new foster home. She gets along well with the other German Shepherds of various ages, but is still figuring out the pack dynamic. She sometimes will react toward the other dogs if she feels threatened, but corrects easily. If she gets too overwhelmed she will find a quiet corner and lie down. She is still a bit cautious when meeting new people and/or dogs, so proper introductions are needed.

Chloe May

Adopted 12/8/17

Chloe May

Chloe May is a lovely black and tan female who is about 6 years old and who weighs about 82 lbs. She was found in a rural area of Merced County, so nothing is known of his background. It appears she has had several litters and was kept outdoors for most of her life. Chloe has had a long time skin condition, and evidence of her skin irritations, and worn down teeth says she has been scratching and itching for a long time. Now that she is on good food and in a healthy home, she is thriving and her skin and coat look great.

She readily jumps up in the car for a ride, and has appropriately greeted everyone she has met so far.

Adopted 11/18/17

Blitzer

Blitzer is an adorable 3 year old sable male. On the smaller side, Blitzer weighs in at about 70 lbs. Blitzer was turned into the shelter due to a divorce and move from Colorado.

Blitzer seems housebroken, and will pace in front of the door when he needs to go out. He was an only dog in his prior home, but gets along with the other large male and female dogs in his foster home. Blitzer would probably do well as an only dog, or with one dog buddy to play with.

Spock Head
More

Adopted 11/11/17

Spock

Spock is an approximately one year old, black and tan male with large pointy ears. He was a stray from a Sacramento area shelter, so nothing is known about his background. He may have been outside a lot or was a stray for sometime, as the fur on the top half of his ears show obvious signs of fly strike.

Spock appears to be housebroken. He is not used to the crate and resists getting in, but is doing better each night settling down to sleep. He is learning house manners and corrects easily. Spock does great on walks, staying by your side, unless he's distracted by another dog or a barking dog behind a fence. He can easily be corrected and doesn't show anything more than curiosity by the distractions. He occasionally picks up items or chews on items in front of him, i.e., socks, shoes, the cord on the vacuum, or his leash. Keeping on eye on this and giving appropriate chew toys will keep him out of trouble.

Chitina, named for a town in Alaska, is an adorable 10-12 month old golden longcoat shepherd mix.  On the petite side this girl weighs in at about 55lbs.  She was an unclaimed stray from a local area shelter so nothing is known about her.

Chitina is a little bundle of energy who likes to play.  She would love a young male dog brother to wrestle with in her new home.  Chitina is housebroken, walks nicely on leash, and knows some basic commands.  She does need a little work in her house manners as this curious girl likes to check out what is on the kitchen counters, and she is quite sure that all of the living room furniture was purchased for her sitting pleasure.

Kairos Head
More

Adopted 10/28/17

Kairos

Kairos is a one year old, handsome black and tan male weighing 60 lbs. He was an owner surrender to a Sacramento area shelter. He was previously kept outside and given up because the family could not afford to care for him properly. He appears to have food or flea allergies that have caused major hair loss and skin irritation. He also was very underweight. With proper diet and medicated baths, in a short time, this boy is already showing improvement.

Kairos is living with a large male German Shepherd and a senior male pug, and gets along well with both. With use of a doggy door, Kairos appears housebroken, however, he is needing to learn proper house manners. Kairos is a good eater and is beginning to put weight on.

Leilani Head
More

Adopted 10/28/17

Leilani

Leilani is an adorable 10 month old, white female weighing 55 lbs. Her previous owners adopted her from Craigslist when she was only 6 weeks old. She spent most of her life in a crate or tethered in the yard, as they didn't have a fenced yard. After 8 months, they decided they didn't have time for her and left her at a shelter in Roseville.

Leilani needs slow introductions with people she doesn't know. Once intros are done, she becomes excited and happy to have attention and affection. If she thinks she's in trouble, she submissively pees. She is mostly housebroken and loves toys and a good game of fetch. She especially loves soft toys, but will shred them and then bring you the remains. Like most young dogs, she will put almost anything in her mouth, so having many toys to direct her to stay away from inappropriate chewing is a must. She is learning house manners and to settle when she's inside the house. She is crate trained, but is only crated at night for sleep in her foster home. When in the yard, she is usually quiet.

With dental work, vet attention, proper care and nutrition he is doing very well.

Nimbus loves to spend time inside with his human and is very affectionate. He is crate trained and would be more than happy to spend the day in the house in a crate when left alone for the day. He also does well when left in the back yard or in a kennel. Nimbus is housebroken, has good house manners, and sleeps well in a crate or on a dog bed in his foster mom's bedroom at night.

Adopted 10/28/17

Remington

Remington (Remy) is a floppy-eared, 80lb, black/tan male, almost 2 years old. He was surrendered to a Sacramento area shelter but no background information was provided.

Remy appears to have been an outside dog, but has quickly learned that living indoors with his canine and human foster family is a pretty good gig. He is a bit uncertain with new situations at first, but is gaining confidence every day as these new experiences become routine. This gentle, affectionate boy has wonderful house manners. Remy sleeps on a dog bed in his foster mom's bedroom at night and he (along with the 3 other dogs in the house) has free run in the house while his foster parents are at work and uses a doggie door to go outside. He met the three other German Shepherds in the foster home easily, but has not been tested with small dogs.

She is house-broken; rides well in the car, and knows basic commands like sit, down, and leave it. Zayla is very treat motivate, and connects with her humans very well. We are working on her leash manners. Zayla is a good alarm barking and will give out a low growl when she hears something outside.

Zayla is a high energy, very confident little girl. She is currently fostered in a home with 2 adult male GSDs and 2 puppies. She isn't afraid to take treats or toys away from the other dogs.

Laurentz

Laurentz is an approximately three year old, very large black and tan handsome male. At 90 lbs, he's very thin and should weigh closer to 100 lbs . He's eating well, so it shouldn't take long for his weight to come back. He was picked up as a stray by a local shelter, so nothing is known of his background.

He met the two senior male German Shepherds and the 2.5 year old female German Shepherd in his foster home fairly easily. Laurentz appears starved for attention and does get very snarky when the resident dogs are near his favorite human. Baldwin

Baldwin is a 5 yo male Black Shepherd weighing about 90 lbs. His previous owners relinquished him to a Sacramento area shelter due to their inability to provide adequate care. When Baldwin arrived, he was missing almost his entire coat, likely due to food and/or flea allergies affecting his skin and coat. With immediate medical care and high quality diet, he is rapidly re-growing his fur. It is unknown whether all of his coat will return, however. Sunscreen is needed in the meantime to keep the exposed skin from getting sunburned.

Baldwin is interested in meeting all dogs, large and small. Once familiar with their presence, he is calm and comfortable. He enjoys human company and appreciates any affection that comes his way, even if it means taking pills or getting his ears medicated.

Originally adopted out in 2010; in her previous home she was living with kids, a small dog, and a male German Shepherd.

Sofie meets most people nicely, but can become anxious in new environments and if a situation is new to her, i.e., did not like a person on crutches and refused to approach to see there was nothing to fear. Adopted 8/5/17

Stazzi

Stazzi is a 9 - 10 month old female with a black coat and golden eyes. She was pulled from a local shelter, where she had been picked up as a stray. When her stray hold was up, she came into Rescue, and was found to be in need of minor eye surgery to correct an inverted eye lid. She loves to play with the other dogs in her foster home, and her best friend is Bella Luna, another available for adoption GSD. Her energy level is moderate for a dog of her age.

Stazzi is housebroken, crate trained, and rides well in a car. She sleeps quietly in her crate at night in her foster's bedroom, and settles nicely on her dog bed while in the house. As a typical puppy, she will still chew on shoes, or clothing that are in reach if left to her own. She likes to play with the garden hose, so irrigation systems in the yard may be of some interest to her too. She is currently being fostered on a farm setting where she is free to roam around the property. She doesn't stray too far from the house, and has a good recall. She gets along very well with all the other dogs in her foster home, but tends to interact more with the younger, playful ones. Stazzi enjoys swimming in the pond and chasing birds that land on the ground. She has not been cat tested.

Jersey is a black and light tan, 7 month old female weighing about 52 lbs. She was a stray out of Placer County, so nothing is known about her background. The shelter said she was very timid when she arrived and therefore made her available to rescue. She clearly was a staff favorite at the shelter, based on the number of people who came to say goodbye to her. She has been in our group since March 2017.

Jersey loves being around other playful dogs. She can be insecure and anxious, but having playful, confident dogs around her, helps her get used to new environments and she seems to accept new people easier when she sees the other dogs getting attention from the human(s). She is house broken, crate trained, loves car rides, and lives nicely with cats.

Yoda Head
More

Adopted 7/22/17

Yoda

Yoda is a black and tan male GSD, approximately 12 months old and very thin at 70 lbs. He came to us from a Sacramento area shelter as a stray whose owners didn't claim, so nothing is known of his background. He appears to have food or flea allergies that have caused major hair loss and skin irritation. With proper diet and medicated baths, in a short time, this boy is already showing significant improvement. He looks a little funny now with his big ears and wrinkled skin, but with his beautiful copper-colored eyes and regal posture, this youngster is well on his way to becoming a stunning dog!

Yoda acts like a giant puppy, goofy and playful at times, but he also likes to chill out on his dog bed near his human. He is currently living with a 4 year old male GSD and a 1 1/2 year old female GSD and he gets along very well with both.

He came from a Sacramento area shelter as a stray, so nothing is known of his background.

He is doing well in his foster home with two senior male German Shepherds and a 2 1/2 year old female German Shepherd. He's just beginning to play with whichever dog he can get to engage with him. He is crate trained, walks fairly well on a leash, and enjoys his car rides. He is working on becoming housebroken and will use a dog door. Havi plays well with other dogs, large and small, but often is not aware he is invading their personal space.

Kiska Head
More

Adopted 2/25/17

Kiska

Kiska is an approximately 6 years old beautiful black and cream female weighing in at approximately 55 lbs. She was originally adopted out of a local area shelter, but was returned when the resident dog was overly exuberant, and invading her space. The adopter wrote a letter about her saying it wasn't her fault and how much he really liked her. Back at the shelter, Kiska was placed in play groups, and did fine as long as the other dogs didn't try to engage in play with her. So care would need to be taken on bringing her into a household with another dog.

Kiska has nice house manners as long as food isn't in her reach. She knows basic commands like sit, come, heal, go potty, go on, wait and look up before being fed, sit before going out for a walk and she is crate trained.

This is a Level 3 Dog. Please be sure you understand what this level of dog requires.

Adopted 2/25/17

Zico

Zico is an energetic, playful 1 year old male Malinois who is looking for his forever family. He was an unclaimed stray from a local shelter, so nothing is known about his background. Zico weighs in at about 55lbs, but still has some filling out to do. Zico is rambunctious, happy, and fun- always up for life's next adventure! Whether he is playing fetch, or with the other dogs in his foster home, Zico is always busy. In his foster home, Zico is working on learning a handful of commands (sit, down, kennel, outside, inside, come here, out, off, no, and "go find your ball"). Zico is working on his leash manners, he does pretty well if you keep him close, but if you give him much leash, he pulls like a freight train. He also gets very excited when a car passes.

Maddox Head
More

Adopted 2/23/17

Maddox

Maddox is a handsome 10-12 month old sable male with a sweet, social personality who was an unclaimed stray from the Modesto shelter. He is a friendly, outgoing boy with quite a bit of puppy left. So far, he likes every dog and person who he meets and is not shy about approaching for play, plus he generally has backed away from conflict. As may be expected for a young dog, he is still learning appropriate boundaries for his mouth.

Whether female or male, he tends to quickly learn which dogs are friendly and tries to play, play, play. Maddox plays a good game of "mouths" nicely for as long as the other dogs do but sometimes does not understand when dogs or people want him to stop. Before learning how to use a dog door, he pawed at the people door when necessary and has been housebroken since.

SENIOR

Adopted 2/18/17

Allana

Allana (Ebony) is an approximate 7 - 8 year old gorgeous black female with a sweet and soft demeanor, an extremely soft coat, and weighs about 65lbs. She has recently returned to rescue due to her primary care taker passing away. When she arrived in rescue in 2009, we gave her the name Allana, but her adopted parents gave her the name Ebony.

Allana initially was shy and timid when arriving at her foster home, not sure about her foster dad or her five foster siblings and stayed mostly in her crate. Over the last three to four weeks, she has engaged with her foster dad and routinely comes up for pets and wakes him up in the morning with kisses.

Jennifer has figured out that she can stand on top of the water jug, and almost jump out of the pen. She is quite rambunctious and loves to play rough and tumble with her littermates. She is the daredevil of the litter and very resourceful.

Adopted 2/18/17

Nadia

Nadia is an approximately 2 years old, petite black and tan female, weighing 48.5 lbs. She was an unclaimed stray from a Sacramento area shelter, so nothing is known of her background. It appears she's had a litter of puppies in the past. She had a fractured pelvis when she came into the shelter, but has healed nicely and is on no restricted activities. She must be making up for the time she was on limited activity, as she is one busy girl but settles when inside.

Nadia is affectionate and loves going on walks. She has proven to be housebroken, although she needs a crate or a secure yard with high fences (can easily clear a 4' fence) while you are gone since she is still learning what not to chew. Nadia enjoys something to chew on in her crate. Currently in a home with two male German Shepherds and one young female German Shepherd.

This is a Level 3 Dog. Please be sure you understand what this level of dog requires.

Amber

Amber is a tan-colored female, approximately 12 months old, and weighs 70 lbs. She was a stray from Yolo County, so nothing is known of her background.

Amber has nice house manners and is housebroken. She will sleep calmly in a crate at night as long as she's near people. She is anxious in new environments and would benefit from having other confident male dogs around her.

She meets new dogs nicely and calmly. She walked by a cat that was lying on a low dresser and never seemed to notice it.

Toro Head

Adopted 1/28/17

Toro

Toro is a 21 month old, striking black and tan male weighing 67 lbs. He is an owner surrender when his prior owners' age and health limited their ability to care properly for him. He came into the program with his sister, Abella.

Adopted at 8 weeks, Toro was not taken out into the world, except for grooming and occasional vet visits. Going for walks is a new experience and once a rhythm is struck, Toro walks fairly well on the leash. He gets anxious by loud cars and people walking past, but is learning to keep moving and enjoy the experience. Initially, Toro was very insecure in this new environment, but each day seems to be getting easier for him and he is showing more affectionate toward his foster mom.

Adopted 1/21/17

Nelson

Nelson is a 3 1/2 year old, black and tan 90 pound boy. He was an owner surrender to a Sacramento area shelter who said he lived with young children, although we always caution about trusting a big dog with new children especially given his size. He also is reported to have lived with other dogs and cats. He is very loving and bonds quickly. He loves hugs and affection. Nelson loves car rides and stays quietly in the back. He also likes golf cart rides. If there were a way for him to drive the golf cart, he would love to. He walks nicely on a leash and corrects easily. He finds security in his crate. He is a very good eater.
