Disco Head
More

Adopted 12/30/2019

Disco

Disco is an adorable 5-6 month old puppy. She is a mix (maybe cattle dog?) with a white chest and freckled paws.

Disco is always movin' and groovin'! She gets along well with other dogs and has learned to leave cats alone. She loves to play chase outside and settles in the house if she has chew bone.

She is a smart girl that will entertain herself, sometimes in undesirable ways.

This is a Level 3 Dog. Please be sure you understand what this level of dog requires.

Treat Head
More

Adopted 12/30/2019

Treat

Treat is a very large black and tan female pup born on 7/3/19. She was surrendered with her sister Trick when the prior owner was unable to find adopters for the last of a litter of puppies. She had been totally an outdoor dog in her original home, so her current foster is extra cautious to not give her free run of the house and takes her out often for potty breaks and is working on house manners. From the size of her feet and growth plates, Treat looks like she'll be a big girl. She already weighs close to 50 lbs. Her one ear is trying to stand, but tends to flop on top of her head. The other ear is likely to follow soon. Because she's still growing, Treat takes regular deep naps.

Treat is a typical puppy who hasn't had any structure. She loves people, but currently jumps up and is very mouthy. For this reason she shouldn't go to a home with small children. She is easy with the other German Shepherds in the home, but the female shepherd will correct her if Treat pesters her too much.

This is a Level 2 Dog.

Ocean Head
More

Adopted 12/21/2019

Ocean

Ocean is an adorable black and tan male, weighing about 57 lbs and is 14 months old. He was surrendered to a shelter when his femur was broken after being hit by a car and his family couldn't afford the surgery. Lucky for Ocean, UC Davis was able to do the repair to his leg on a grant for the shelter. His femur now has plates and screws holding it together. Six weeks post-surgery X-rays show he is healing well. The UC Davis vets also noted osteoarthritis in his elbows, but he has no signs of problems or pain from them. He is restricted to leash activity outside until November. Given his leg and elbow issues, future high impact activity must be limited and he should be kept on the thin side.

Ocean loves to go for walks and is up to almost a mile. He still acts like a puppy and wants to put anything loose in his mouth like sticks, yard bark, leaves from branches handing at his eye level, and remote controls.

This is a Level 2 Dog.

Duke Ellington Head
More

SPECIAL NEEDS

Adopted 12/7/2019

Duke Ellington

Duke is a 2-year-old male with a medium energy level. A professional trainer purchased him as a puppy. She closed her facility and asked us to find him a home. We soon saw he needed cataract surgery. The generosity of supporters allowed us to have that done for him and he is doing great.

While she did leash train him well, she left him kennelled and only walked him on the property. Because of this lack of socializing, he is fearful of new things. He never acts out negatively, but hides in a corner to escape. New people must earn his trust. He trusts his foster mom, but unexpected movements from even kids in the foster home make him nervous. He warms up quickly to new dogs and loves to play with them. He does well with cats. He is well mannered, both indoors and out.

This is a Level 2 Dog.

Dean Head
More

Adopted 11/23/2019

Dean

Dean is a handsome black and tan boy at around 18-24 months old. He came to us from a local shelter so we don't know much about his background. This stunning boy is young and active and loves to get attention from dogs and people alike. He really believes he is just a giant lap dog and would love nothing more than to snuggle up and get attention from any willing person. He will try and climb/put his feet up to get closer to his person but quickly gets back down when corrected.

Dean currently lives with another female shepherd and loves to follow along.

Wasabi Head
More

Adopted 11/23/2019

Wasabi

Wasabi is approximately 4 years old and a stunning bi-color male German Shepherd. He is from a local shelter so nothing is known of his background. He is a large framed dog, but he only weighs around 70 pounds and could stand to gain some weight, but luckily he has a great appetite. Wasabi prefers a big soft and fluffy bed because this boy is a bit bony at the moment.

Wasabi has low to moderate energy, is affectionate (but not overly so), likes to be pet, and occasionally gives a very tiny lick on your hand. He likes to play with stuffed animals and squeaky toys.

Cork Head
More

SPECIAL NEEDS

Adopted 11/16/2019

Cork

Cork is a unique looking brown long coat male, approximately 3 years old, with one adorable floppy ear. He was a stray from a local shelter, so no information is known about his past. From his appearance, he looked liked he'd been on the streets for some time before landing in the shelter.

In his first foster home, Cork enjoyed playing with the other female German Shepherd who was close to his age. He is now in a home with another German Shepherd and a terrier mix. When not playing with the terrier he actively seeks out places to lay where it's cool, ie, soft dirt behind bushes. He will sometimes come when called but not consistently, but usually a food prompt is enough to get him to come. However, when you call him (and he listens) he looks fantastic as he gallops across the yard.

Zana Head
More

Adopted 10/31/2019

Zana

Zana is a zesty 5 year old black and tan spayed female. She initially came to our program at the age of 3 and was adopted to a family who owned another male German Shepherd and a cat. After gradual introductions with the kitty, all three became the best of friends. She was returned to us because the family must move into an apartment that does not accept dogs. Her ideal weight is 65 lbs, however, she was returned with several extra pounds. She is active and loves her walks, so she should get back to her ideal weight soon.

Despite the recent changes in her life, Zana remains her vibrant self, ready to jump into new experiences with exuberant curiosity. She wants to please her human and uses every ounce to display pure joy when she reunites. She is a quick learner who loves to meet adults as well as older children.

Ashley

Ashley is a petite, 10-11 month old female weighing about 45 lbs. She's almost all black with a little brown on her feet. This girl was from a local shelter so nothing is known about her start in life.

Cristiano Head
More

Adopted 10/19/2019

Cristiano

Cristiano is a three year old black and tan male. He was surrendered to a local vet so not much is known about his background. We do know he previously lived with a small dog and has greeted all sized dogs nicely since coming into rescue. He is currently living with a female shepherd. They only play occasionally, but he does love the companionship of having her around.

Cristiano is housebroken and has pretty nice manners while inside, but if left unsupervised he may help himself to the trash can if the opportunity presents itself. While he will sleep in a crate at night he does not like to be left alone in the crate and may cry loudly or attempt to get out if left alone. He will prefers to sleep freely on a dog bed in his foster moms room at night.

Shaggy Head
More

Adopted 10/19/2019

Shaggy

Shaggy is approximately 7.5 years old male with a gorgeous black and tan plush coat, weighing approximately 75 lbs. This is his second time in our rescue. He was initially adopted from us as a 1 year old and, through no fault of his own, found himself left at a Shelter. Thanks to his microchip, GCGSR was contacted and we were able to retrieve our boy.

He currently resides in a foster home with one senior female (see Betty), where he previously shared the household with two other sequential female partners. With each, he enjoys free roam of the home during long work days. Several of these females have attempted to engage him in play, but sadly, he shows no interest. If pestered by other dogs, he will respond with a clear verbal refusal. This boy simply won't dance. Although he is extremely comfortable and accepting of a large dog pack (that includes both large and small dogs), his preference is to be among the humans.

This is a Level 3 Dog. Please be sure you understand what a dog of this Level requires.

Tyra

Tyra is an energetic 4-year-old that is black with silver feet. She was abandoned at a boarding facility several years ago. The facility closed and asked us to find her a home.

Since coming to us she has learned the joys of playing fetch and riding in the car. She's shy around new people and places but is improving. At home she gets very excited to see people she knows and jumps up. She will sit when reminded. Tyra gets along with other dogs but doesn't initiate play.

Tyra needs a foster home.

McKennie Head
More

Adopted 9/28/2019

McKennie

McKennie is a handsome 2 year old black male with a white patch on his chest. He is a stout boy weighing in at 75lbs. McKennie came from a local area shelter where his former owners said they didn't have time for him.

McKennie is a social boy that gets along with all of the other large dogs in his foster home. He is energetic and really likes to rough and tumble with the younger dogs in his home, so he would likely be too much for a small dog. He is respectful of the older dogs in the home that don't appreciate his youngster antics. McKennie came to us with fairly nice house manners as well as knowledge of basic commands such as sit, down, and off. He is also crate trained, sleeping quietly all night.

Betty Head

SENIOR

Adopted 9/21/2019

Betty

Meet our 'Best in Show Beauty Queen', Miss Betty, who is a 10 year old black and tan female. Found as a stray, we do not know details about her past other than the fact that she appears to have given birth to several litters.

Betty carries her 75 lbs in a compact low-riding package with an irresistible face that is matched by her gentle personality. Although timid to new experiences, she quickly warms up to meeting all people and dogs (large and small) with ease and confidence. Despite her low energy, she will occasionally express her desire to play with other dogs by voicing a baritone grunt. Betty also likes to put her paw up to shake hands when meeting new people.

Cookie Head
More

Adopted 9/21/2019

Cookie

Cookie is a black and tan female about one years old. She was a stray from a local shelter, so we don't know her history. It is apparent she already had a litter of puppies and it may explain why she's very underweight at only 49 pounds. She needs to slowly gain 10-15 pounds and build up her muscle tone.

As her name implies, this girl is super sweet. She loves attention and will shadow the foster as much as possible, but needs to learn that pawing and trying to climb on her human is not acceptable. She did well meeting the three German Shepherds in the foster home and was very polite with a small dachshund she encountered when visiting the vets office. The young male in the foster home plays very rough and Cookie doesn't appreciate his style.

Tasha is housebroken and knows some basic commands. She is very friendly with other dogs. In her previous foster home, she lived with 2 adult male and 2 adult female German Shepherds. She is cautious around new people, but once she warms up, she is all about the kisses and belly rubs.

Tucker is well trained and knows all of his basic commands and has nice house manners. He has not yet taken to the doggie door but he is housebroken and will let you know if he needs to go out. He can sleep free or in a crate overnight. He walks well on a leash but needs occasional corrections or reminders that his human is in charge of the walk, not him.

Lolita Head
More

Adopted 9/15/2019

Lolita

Lolita is a black and tan female, approximately 7 years old and weighs 70 lbs. She was adopted from us two years ago, but the family's life style changed when two 3.5 year old children came to live with them. Lolita was not getting the exercise or structure she needed and the children running around making lots of noise caused her stress. Lolita prefers a calm environment and was not doing well with this new chaos in the home.

Lolita knows basic commands, is housebroken, crates nicely, loves car rides and daily walks. Previously she lived with an older chihuahua and a cat. In her current foster home, she does well with the senior male German Shepherd who doesn't engage in play.

DuChemin is a very sweet and mellow boy. He has good house manners-uses a doggy door and has not had a single accident. He sleeps well in a crate for a few hours while his foster mom is at work but would probably be fine without the crate. At night he sleeps quietly on a dog bed in the master bedroom. She is currently being fostered with a one year old female German Shepherd who is trying to teach her the ropes. She enjoys playing with her foster sister but is still unsure of some new things. Riley is learning potty training and walking on a leash. She cries in her crate, but eventually settles. She enjoys snuggling up to cuddle.

Dirk gets along well with the other large male and female dogs in his foster home. He loves to play play play with the younger male and female dogs...chase, bitey face, a good wrestling match, it is all fun to him. While Dirk likes attention from his humans, he is not a needy dog. He will snuggle for a few minutes, then be on his way. Dirk rides nicely in the car, is easy to have in the home, and after a bit will settle in a crate at night. She also had to have several surgeries to remove embedded foxtails. She is healed now and her snowy white coat is growing in nicely.

Lubeck is a little bit of both a chill, mellow dude, and a bull in a china shop. Most of the time Lu is a 'go with the flow' kind of dog, he walks nicely on leash, he hasn't reacted to people, objects or other animals while out walking. Adopted 7/20/2019

Mina

Mina is a 9 month old, petite black and tan female weighing only 45 lbs. She has a bit of an amazing story. She somehow ended up on a high school campus and for more than a month she was able to avoid being caught. She survived on the food the students left behind. Some community members tried for weeks to befriend her, but they could just never get quite close enough. She would engage and play but kept herself literally just slightly out of reach. One evening she found herself cornered in the tennis courts. Thankfully a group of people attending a baseball game were able to corner her. Once cornered she became submissive and she was able to be caught. The good Samaritan who was primarily responsible for helping this girl, kept her for the required hold period and no one came to claim her. She took care of some of her mandatory vaccinations and contacted us to transfer her over.

Nori Head

Adopted 6/22/2019

Nori

Nori is a very handsome 12-18 month black long coat male (potentially some Belgian Sheepdog in his genes). He came to us from a local shelter so nothing is known about his background. This happy boy has a high level of energy and loves to play play play. He has learned he loves the inside life and wants to be with his favorite people.

Nori is housebroken with the use of a dog door. He is learning basic commands and how to walk nicely on a leash. Lola A is 7-8 years old weighing 69 lbs. She was originally a stray from the Napa area and nothing is known of her original start in life. Lola may have gray around the muzzle, but she still needs her daily walks and on occasion will bounce around you like a puppy. When she was about 3-4 years old she was heartworm positive, but has been treated with no complications or problems since then.

She is housebroken, crate trained, knows basic commands, and loves car rides. She has tried to sneak onto the bed and a couch, but with one verbal command to get off, she has not tried it again. Her other house manners are excellent. This smart girl has learned to open doors with flipper handles, so they must be locked to keep her in or out of areas she's not allowed.

He initially weighed in at 110 lbs, which is far too heavy, but is gradually trimming down to a very healthy physique that allows him to enjoy his daily 3 to 4 mile walks like a champ!

Living indoors is very new to this boy. Even though he learned to navigate his way on tile and hard surface flooring with confidence, he may require time to adjust to new slick surfaces. Quint is an adorable, very lively, very sweet, 2 year old male, solid black with just a dusting of gold on his legs. He's a big boy, still skinny at 80 pounds and happy to eat whatever is put in front of him. He should fill out to around 90 pounds when mature. He came to us from a local shelter, so nothing is known of his background. We can guess that he was an outside only dog, since he can be a bit tentative in new situations such as slick floors, household noises, and sometimes with unknown people, especially men. Once he's comfortable, he can be very bold, and life is a big, fun, exciting game. When calm, he can be very sweet and sit very nicely for attention. He loves to be petted and loves to be told he's a good boy, wagging his tail from across the room.

He's housebroken and makes liberal use of a dog door, flying in and out when excited. He craves attention, and apparently could only get it previously by jumping on people and mouthing at their hands.
