TuxTux Head

SPECIAL NEEDS

Tux is a large, approximately 3 year old male. He is primarily black with a patch of white fur on his chest. Tux came out of a Sacramento area shelter, so nothing is known of his background. He was underweight when he first came to us but has slowly but putting weight back on and currently weighs approximately 90 pounds. Tux came to our group after receiving FHO (hip) surgery in February.

Tux is a happy-go-lucky boy who appears to get along well with most other dogs and really loves his people. He plays well with the young female German Shepherd in his foster home. Tux is learning basic commands and overall has shown good house manners. He is housebroken and fairly well crate trained, but he prefers being outside rather than in his crate during the day. He walks well on a leash, but most walks are slow and controlled for his rehab. He also spends time walking up and down inclines in order to further facilitate all rehabilitation efforts.

Tux is gentle but he can be a bit of a leaner, and given his size, that can be something to watch out for. He has shown interest and curiosity when encountering large animals such as horses on walks and hikes. He has not spent much time around small children, cats, or small dogs so it is unknown how he would do with them.

The vet who performed his surgery indicated Tux had a lot of muscle damage and it will take time for him to build it back up. It may be a number of months of rehab before he is at full strength, but he is showing good progress. The best guess as to his background was that he previously suffered an injury which was not cared for immediately and lead to it healing poorly. Due to the extent of the damage and time before proper treatment, Tux may always walk with a limp and have an ongoing, occasional need for pain/anti-inflammatory meds. Accordingly, he is listed as special needs. But don't let his injured leg fool you, he can run quite well on his 3 good legs when there is a squirrel to be chased.

Tux is looking for a family that will continue his rehab and training.
