Ottowa

Ottowa aka Otto is a 12 month old, black and tan male weighing about 60 lbs but can stand to put on a few pounds. He came from a Merced shelter, but we learned from a neighbor of the original owner that he was an outdoor only dog that was not well cared for. Otherwise, nothing is known of his background.

Otto walks well on the leash, but doesn't know his basic commands. He learned to sit easily (or he doesn't get fed), but we are still working on other commands. He is learning house manners and hasn't had any accidents in his foster home, although has not been given free run of the house. He met the three other German Shepherds easily and occasionally plays with the young female shepherd. He's met the indoor cats and corrects easily to leave them alone, but has not been off leash around them.

Otto can be mouthy when excited and is learning to take treats gently. At this time, he should not go to a home with young children. Crates are new to this boy and he's learning that making a fuss inside doesn't get him an early release. Otto causes a vocal fuss whenever he doesn't get his way, but he is learning that this is not proper behavior. This boy craves attention and is very sweet. At times, Otto finds soft toys or rope toys fun to play with.

Outside alone, Otto sometimes barks for attention. He could benefit from a companion dog if possible or someone willing to work with his outside barking. His new home must commit to training, exercise and continued socialization.
