MerrellMerrell Head

Merrell is a 6 - 7 year old black and tan male from a Sacramento area shelter. He was an owner surrender, but no specific reason was given for his surrender. At 87 lbs, Merrell can stand to put on at least five more pounds. He was previously an outside only dog and has severe fly strike on his ears and much of his fur is missing on his back either due to fleas or some other allergies. With a good diet and care, his fur will come back, his dry skin should go away and he'll be one handsome boy.

Merrell is living with three other German Shepherds and met them without any problems. He does not seem interested in playing with the other dogs, but he may just need more time to adjust. He's walked by a room with cats behind a baby gate and showed no reaction. There have been no up close encounters with the cats, to know how he'd react. Merrell was reluctant to walk on the tile floors initially, but is learning that it is OK to do so. He is learning house manners and he will be on a leash until we know if he is trustworthy in the house. He is sleeping nicely through the night in a crate.

Merrell is food motivated, which helps teach him some basic commands. He's learning to sit for treats, food and attention. Generally calm but when excited, Merrell jumps up and is being taught that it is not appropriate. Until his jumping is under control, he should not go into a home with small children. It is also not known how he'd do with small dogs or other small creatures.

Merrell chills out and has been very quiet when outside. He could live as an only dog, but would prefer someone to be around and teach him new things.

This is a Level 3 Dog. Please be sure you understand what a dog of this Level requires.<
